Health 101 & Winter in Québec
Nov 24 @ 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Did you recently move to the Greater Québec City region and have questions about the provincial health care system? In 2018 Jeffery Hale Community Services, the Community Wellness Centre, and the Voice of English-speaking Québec put together a comprehensive guide with the intention of helping newcomers navigate the medical system here in Québec City with a little more ease and efficiency. Since then, we provide a space for newcomers to meet other newcomers while having their doubts cleared out by either a nurse or a social worker from the JEFF (as we colloquially refer to the Jeffery Hale Community Services).

Start jotting down your questions!

Russia, Ukraine and Vladimir Putin, Lifelong Learning
Feb 16 @ 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

This event is open to all adults aged 50+ in the Quebec City area.

The Russian attack on Ukraine and the Ukrainians’ amazing resistance is one of the most extraordinary and important events of our lifetime. Its impact will resonate on the world for decades to come. For over a decade Barry has been studying Russian and Ukrainian history, and has travelled extensively in both countries. He is in daily contact with Ukrainian friends and follows the war closely, both on a political and military level.

This illustrated presentation, of forty minutes duration, shows wartime life in the famous Ukrainian city of Odesa and then moves on to a 2015 trip to Moscow to view the 70th anniversary parade of Russia’s winning of the Great Patriotic War. (WWII) Some of the photos are astonishing.

After showing these images, Barry will move on to try and explain the character and history of the Russian people which has led to this criminal war, and discuss the personality of Vladimir Putin, a leader who is the ultimate symbol of Russia’s inability to deal with its turbulent past.

Travel Log: Lifelong Learning
Feb 16 @ 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

This event is open to all adults aged 50+ in the Quebec City area.

Presented by Barry Lane

CANADIAN PACIFIC AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL

The story of Canadian Pacific is one of the greatest stories in the world. Straddling the continent for more than a century and globe for more than fifty years, Canadian Pacific is inextricably linked with the history of Canada itself.

In 1885, the company completed the construction of two thousand miles of railway system and linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. It then established fleets of vessels on both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, laying the foundation for a transportation route that allowed members of the British Empire to travel around the world. To enhance the travel experience, the company also constructed great castle-like hotels, including the Algonquin in St. Andrews, the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, and the Banff Springs Hotel in the Rockies, which themselves became landmarks.

With a 40 minute illustrated presentation, author and lecturer, Barry Lane will relate this special history, and then go on to talk about his experiences as a cruise ship lecturer and leader of Trans-Canada rail trip journeys. (He has lectured on at least 200 different cruises in Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, and been leader/lecturer of 15 rail trips across Canada, all of which stayed in CP’s great railway hotels. He will give you some travel trips for your future travels.

As a door prize to the talk, Barry will also offer a copy of his “sumptuously illustrated,” 2015 book, “Canadian Pacific and the Golden Age of Travel

Quebec City Women’s Club February Presentation
Feb 28 @ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Invited speaker: Lisa Matthes, Postdoctoral fellow in Oceanography, Takuvik Joint International Laboratory, Université Laval /CNRS

Title: The role of advanced robotics in studying the Arctic under-ice light field

Zoom link: https://ulaval.zoom.us/j/66544948499?pwd=aTRKejBsVnVGdDUvK0doemUzOWZwZz09

The Arctic Ocean has been the epicentre of climate change with a much faster warming rate compared to the globe. This warming causes the sea ice cover to shrink rapidly with a large impact on all levels of the Arctic marine food web, from polar bears to microscopic algae. Oceanographic studies of the changes in this remote and hard-to-access region are often limited to small areas and/or short time periods, which hampers predictions about the future of the sea ice ecosystem. This talk will provide insights on how recent advancements in underwater robotics help to extend the knowledge about the development of phytoplankton blooms throughout the year. Together, we will look at how optical and biological data are collected by remotely operated and autonomous platforms over larger spatial and temporal scales to better understand the marine ecosystem in Baffin Bay.

Lisa Matthes: After graduating with a master’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Rostock in Germany and a PhD degree in Arctic Research at the University of Manitoba, Lisa Matthes joined the Takuvik International Research Laboratory as postdoctoral fellow in April 2021. Her research work focuses on light availability in the marine ecosystem and how it controls the magnitude and timing of Arctic primary production. She is specifically interested in how a sea ice cover impacts light propagation in the underlying water column and how it affects phytoplankton throughout the Arctic growth season. To find answers to these questions, she deploys optical sensor packages in combination with advanced underwater robotics and collects water samples for many biological parameters during field expeditions in the Arctic and sub-Arctic Ocean.

Lady Franklin’s Revenge: Lifelong Learning
Mar 21 @ 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
This event is open to all adults aged 50+ in the Quebec City area.

Presented by John Felvinci
When Sir John Franklin disappeared into the Arctic in 1845, it was his adventurous wife, Jane Franklin, who kept the search for him alive and, as a result, contributed more to the discovery and mapping of the North than any explorer. This lecture is based on a biography from historian Ken McGoogan. Lady Franklin’s Revenge is the richly documented story of a complex, ambitious Victorian―arguably the greatest woman traveller of the 19th century― and the transformation of a failed expedition into a triumphant legend. Added are the latest discoveries about the expedition in the Canadian Arctic.

Women of Impressionism: Lifelong Learning
Mar 23 @ 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM

This event is open to all adults aged 50+ in the Quebec City area.

FACILITATOR: Kay Palkhivala

This lecture discusses the art of five 19th Century female painters who worked during the Impressionist period, mainly in France. This artistic style focused on capturing an informal effect or “impression” of a subject, rather than a studied and formal representation. At the time, it was heavily criticized by the artistic establishment, who felt it was a rejection of true art. Today, Impressionist painting is hugely popular and the works of Monet, Sisley, Renoir and Manet, among others, command high prices. As is often the case, the women artists who worked at that time are much less known and valued. This lecture describes their struggle for recognition and demonstrates why they should not be forgotten.

This is a hybrid event, our presenter will be joining us via Zoom, however members are welcome to attend in person in the Lifelong Learning room at EQLC.

Registration is required.
