Before you begin entering your amounts in each expense category below, please review the following list of common costs and things to consider. You can also refer to the table at the bottom of the page for more detailed examples.

Things to consider when renting an apartment

  •  What is the heating source (electric, water, oil)?
  •  Are pets allowed?
  •  Is a parking space included in the cost of the rent?
  •  Are there washer and dryer connections in the rental unit? In the building? Shared with other tenants?
  •  Is the apartment semi-furnished (washer, dryer, fridge and stove)?
  •  Does the apartment have its own balcony? Shared balcony (with a partition separating the neighbour’s section)? Access to a yard?
  •  Will you be allowed to paint the apartment?
  •  Will you have access to a storage space in the building or outside?
  •  Is the building equipped with a secured entrance (intercom)?
  •  When looking for an apartment, consider its proximity to stores (grocery, pharmacy, etc.), schools, work, public transit (buses).
  •  July 1st is moving day for 95% of tenants. As such, it is a very busy period for movers and truck rental companies, and costs increase significantly during this period.
