Library Workshop: Reading Poetry
Oct 8 @ 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Reading poetry can seem like a daunting exercise, but it doesn’t have to be!

Join us at the Library for “Writing Writing,” the third instalment of our Reading Poetry workshop, where we’ll explore the work of four North American women poets that will help us answer two simple questions: What are poems made of and what can they do?

The aim of this workshop is to give you the tools and vocabulary with which to discuss, think about, and above all, appreciate poetry.

You can attend the workshop in-person or online. Please email library@morrin.org to learn more or to sign up!

Yes, And… Improv Workshop Series
Oct 18 @ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

In this improvisation series, presented by stage actor and director Michael Bourguignon, you will learn the A-to-Z of performance, how to think on (and off) your feet, and how to support your fellow performers by developing teamwork and trust. Through a variety of warm-up exercises, games, and off-the-cuff scenarios, you will experience the fun (and funny!) world of improvisation in a safe and supportive environment. Bring your smile and sense of spontaneous adventure! No ifs or buts …

Michael Bourguignon is a stage actor and director known for his quick wit and his penchant for pratfalls and other forms of physical comedy. Currently vice-president of the Quebec Art Company, Quebec City’s foremost English-language theatre group, Michael discovered his passion for the stage late in life, but he hit the boards running and hasn’t looked back. Like his lifelong mentor, Bugs Bunny, Michael is a versatile character actor who dabbles in musicals and overdresses for almost every occasion. When not onstage, he is a teacher, communications consultant, voiceover artist, sometime stand-up comedian, and proud father. In all these roles, he always asks himself, “What would Bugs Bunny do?”

Health 101
Nov 9 @ 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Did you recently move to the Greater Québec City region and have questions about the provincial health care system? In 2018 Jeffery Hale Community Services, the Community Wellness Centre, and the Voice of English-speaking Québec put together a comprehensive guide with the intention of helping newcomers navigate the medical system here in Québec City with a little more ease and efficiency. Since then, we provide a space for newcomers to meet other newcomers while having their doubts cleared out by either a nurse or a social worker from the JEFF (as we colloquially refer to the Jeffery Hale Community Services).

Start jotting down your questions!

Click here to consult the guide.

Please note that the guide is currently being edited and the most updated version will be ready on the day of the workshop (Nov. 9th).

A participation prize will be awarded to one of the participants.

Book Launch with Louisa Blair – Morrin Centre
Nov 16 @ 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Library Lectures:
Book Launch of The Calf With Two Heads
by Louisa Blair

Join us for the launch of Louisa Blair’s book The Calf With Two Heads on Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m.!

“Wow! I’m impressed. Stop scrolling on your phones and have a look at this.”

– Tomson Highway, Cree playwright, author, musician

These beautifully illustrated stories of natural history in nineteenth-century Canada are about the curious men and women who crossed the oceans from Europe to explore, map, draw, puzzle about, collect and exhibit nature in Canada. Informed by French, British and Indigenous naturalists, they tried to understand what they saw. What did it all mean about the origins of the world?

Louisa Blair, an amateur naturalist in Quebec and a transatlantic species herself, tells tales on Darwin, Russell Wallace, and James Cook, and lingers on the strange and colourful details of Canada’s stubborn resistance to evolutionism and its first natural history museums with their penchant for deformities. These stories feature Indigenous mapmakers, botanical artists, bug-bitten rock fanatics, arctic explorers, and a trio of Quebec women who managed to get plants named after themselves. In short, muddy boots, cold hands, a pocket full of fossils, a mind full of existential questions. To make her case, Louisa Blair has gathered a vast collection of vintage illustrations. Blair also salutes their successors, the citizen scientists who are now frantically mapping Canada’s biodiversity before it fades to bio-monotony. What does it all mean for the end of the world?

NOTE: This event will be hybrid.

Online Kahoots game: Les phénomènes de la nature
Nov 22 @ 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

When learning a new language, it is inevitable to sometimes get lost in translation. My beginnings in French were quite hilarious and often embarrassing, but at least it made me giggle. I remember that at first, I used to think that the “hôtel de ville” was a hotel chain, like Marriott, Hilton, Barceló, etc.

Did you know that Québec City is among the top ten of the snowiest cities in Canada?  One of the recommendations that you will often hear is “check the forecast daily” and with all due reason, especially in the winter. It is important though to learn the vocabulary and expressions associated with the natural phenomena, which is why VEQ in collaboration with Canadian Parents for French is organising this fun game night.

At the end of the game, the winner of the game will get an electronic $30 gift card. Another gift card will be raffled among all participants.

Duo Choeur(s)
Nov 29 @ 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Enjoy a multidisciplinary meeting between poetry and audio art that allow the creation of collages where poetic and audio influences intermingle.

The duos Chœur(s) are lengthy correspondences between poets and audio artists from different locations in Canada, from the East Coast to the West. Some write and create in French, others in English. This project was driven by the concept of encounters: multidisciplinary meetings between poetry and audio art that allow the creation of collages where poetic and audio influences intermingle. The soundscapes reverberate with the poets’ words, offering audiences a unique poetic listening experience.

This show features a Montreal duo comprised of poet Kaie Kellough and sound artist Oana Avasilichioaei, as well as a duo made up of British-Columbian poet Fred Wah and Quebec sound artist Miriane Rouillard.

Postcards from Quebec – Cultural Fairs – South and Central America

The fifth event of the Postcards from Quebec series will take place at the Morrin Centre on January 28, from 1 to 3 p.m.. Join us to enjoy music, art, and snacks from South and Central America, as well as a concert and talk by Federico Tarazona! All activities are free.

The Charango and Andean Music

In Peru, there’s a strong tradition related to the musical instrument known as the charango that goes far back in history. It’s a unique tradition making the charango, without a doubt, one of the most characteristic and popular musical instruments of Andean culture.
This concert and talk focuses on musical traditions of the Andes, notably, on the charango, a string instrument most likely originally created according to and inspired by the 17th century Spanish baroque guitar. Federico Tarazona has created his own version of the instrument, named hatun charango (grand charango), a new variant in the instrument family offering more possibilities than the traditional charango when it comes to harmonies and polyphony.

Renowned for his exciting interpretation, extraordinary technique and musical expression, Federico Tarazona is considered one of the world’s finest Andean charango virtuosos, and one of the most important South-American composers of his generation.
