Kay grew up in rural New Zealand and has worked in the farming, nursing, hospitality, and higher education sectors. Throughout her life Kay has been a very active craft creator across many mediums including knitting, embroidery, lacemaking, and paper making. Kay’s first love and one she has tutored in is embroidery and with its history and different techniques from many different parts of the world it has endless possibilities, only governed by the creative mind behind the needle.
Kay is happiest when she has a needle and fabric in hand and by the time she arrives in Canada, Kay will be well into her latest project. Passing this love of creating on to others is a privilege and pleasure for Kay and we hope you will come and be stimulated to stretch your own creative talents. Registr

Chris is an inveterate traveler and seeker of new challenges. From school to the New Zealand Navy, through 20+ years in the Tourist Hotel Industry, 10 years in the Tertiary Education Sector and 8 years in Local Government, Chris has amassed a wide range of experiences and skills. Chris’s last professional role before semi-retiring was Director of Emergency Management for the Province of Otago following which he began a combination of consulting engagements, interspersed with a passion for sharing the beauty of the South Island as a Tour Guide/Driver for small international nature tours. Chris will share with us a view of what life is like being a “Kiwi” (New Zealander), and why a visit to New Zealand should be on your bucket list!

Join Lifelong Learning members Mamie and Frances for a stroll down Maguire. We will be meeting on the corner of St. Louis and Maguire making our way up one side of the street and down the other. Maguire is Sillery’s major shopping street, with its fashionable boutiques and excellent restaurants and cafes, it spans over a few hundred meters. You can sit on one of its terraces while sipping a glass of wine or a latte. Come and enjoy at your leisure, the 12 boutiques and 16 restaurants that fill the street with their sounds and aromas while discussing the history of the street with fellow Lifelong Learners. Members are welcome to extend their time on Maguire with lunch after our stroll. Paid parking is available on Maguire or you can find free parking on one of the side streets.

- Everyone is welcome including expectant moms, moms who have breastfed before, those who are breastfeeding now, as well as those who have chosen another feeding option.

Join Maria (VEQ), Catherine (LLL), and Moumy (SSEN) for lunch at Le Corsaire Microbrasserie followed by a free tour of the Musée de la Alphonse-Desjardins.
About the Musée: Let a guide take you back to 1906, through this Victorian house, the birthplace of the first financial services cooperative known as a “caisse.” Dive into the world of Alphonse and Dorimène Desjardins and get a first-hand look at some of their belongings. In addition to the historic home, visit the house next door for an exhibit dedicated to the story of the Desjardins couple and the founding of the caisses. Learn more about the founders, whose commitment earned them the honour of being named National Historic Persons.
Transport will be provided by VEQ. There will be two pick-up locations. One at Jeffery Hale departing at 10:00am, and the second at Eastern Quebec Learning Centre, departing at 10:30am. Our day will start with lunch at 11am followed by the tour at 1pm. We will be making our way back to the North Shore shortly after 2:00pm.

Do you have a child in the sixth grade moving onto secondary school next year? Both English-speaking parents AND their soon-to-be high schoolers are invited to take part in this helpful virtual workshop being offered FREE by the community Wellness Centre.
Join psycho-educator Julie Fraser and others for this new workshop designed to cover many of the questions and worries you might have about this milestone time in a young person’s life. Julie has much knowledge to share thanks to her career as a psycho-educator in a primary school, and from the first-hand experience she gained when her own children transitioned to high school.

English and French-speakers get together once a month to work to a variety of tasks while practicing their second-language in small groups. It’s fun, informal and a great way to make new friends. Francophones, Anglophones and Allophones (people who speak another language besides French or English) are welcome.
Volunteers work together in conversation groups on tasks like: washing/sanitizing toys, preparing crafts, folding newsletters or pamphlets, organizing books, folding fresh laundry, hanging decorations. These activities occur once a month on Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Midis en Musique Join us as we take a trip to the Holy Trinity Cathedral (close to the Morrin Center) to enjoy their final performance of the summer, entitled Duo Mano a Mano (no charge). Running from September 12th to December 12th, the classes will be held from 9:30 to 10:30am. A chair yoga session compliments a guided meditation during this 50 minute long class. Join VEQ, in partnership with the Municipality of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier will offer a unique cooking workshop that will have us collectively make several meals that can be frozen, as well as a communal lunch together. A facilitator will guide the group through several recipes in the community center kitchens. Participants will be asked to bring a part of the ingredient list or other supplies.
September’s theme will be Chinese Food, with several classic recipes being shared.

Yes, you can overcome the Winter Blues (SAD)! The weather can impact anyone’s mood, but seasonal changes can have even greater effects on well-being. You may start to feel “down” when the days get shorter in the fall and winter and then feel better in the spring, with longer daylight hours. If you notice feeling like a different person depending on the season, you may be particularly sensitive to these shifts.

Voice of English-speaking Québec invites people over 50 to hop on the bus as we go Out and About!
This outing will be to the Governor General’s Residence at the Citadelle de Quebec. Transporation will be provided with pick-up in Shannon, St. Gabriel de Valcartier and L’Ancienne-Lorette. We will take an hour long, English-language, guided tour of the second official residence of the Govenor General of Canada. The residence features an impressive collection of Canadian art and is a great way to learn about the history and government of Canada.

Become a thespian for a day as the Lifelong Learning room transforms into the Globe Theatre with a reading of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Each week, participants will choose a character at random to read aloud while our facilitator, Meb Reisner, discusses the play. Join us for all four sessions and receive a door prize at the end!
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s finest plays. We will be exploring the conscience and the effect of guilt on the human mind. Macbeth explores reality and illusion; witchcraft and kingship; the natural order; light and life; darkness and death. A perfect play to discover in October!

Living Life to the Full is a fun and interactive 4-week mental health promotion course given in English by the Association canadienne pour la santé mentale filiale de Québec. The course uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people understand their feelings, thoughts and behaviours, and what to do about them. The course is for anyone dealing with stress, anxiety or just needing help in dealing with life’s challenges.
Each two and a half hour session focuses on a different topic, such as the following:
- Understanding unhelpful thoughts
- Engaging in enjoyable activities
- Coping with anger
- Solving daunting problems
Living Life to the Full is intended for all ages.
The Wellness Centre will provide free refreshments.
You must register for this course because places are limited to a maximum of 15 participants. We request that you commit to attending the course from beginning to end.

Birthing a child is an historic family occasion. It can be a very emotional, awesome and even stressful time for parents-to-be. The Wellness Centre is here to support you, especially in this unusual time. Pandemic or not, everyone needs to be ready for baby’s arrival.
Get ready for birth by attending four Prenatal Information Meetings given by the perinatal team from Jeffery Hale Community Services.
Due to COVID-19 and the most recent government measures that will be in place, it is yet to be decided if the meetings will take place online or in person, or both. The decision will be taken one month prior to the meetings.

We’re back for another season but under a new name! Join us for the launch of the Parents and Petits Get-together, a new activity for English-speaking families with babies and pre-school aged children that combines our former Take-a-Break, Baby Chat and Café au lait.
- The space is set up to give English-speaking pre-school aged kids a chance to play and interact.
- Parents must stay on-site.

Out & About offers English speakers (50+) free transportation to various community activities while providing the opportunity to get out, socialize, and bond with others. Join us this week as we visit the beautiful Cap Tourmente Wildlife Area and experience the migration of the snow geese. Every fall the snow geese stop at this reserve during their migration and we will enjoy guided explanations of this phenomenon. Entry fees are between $4-$6.

Breathing is something we do every moment of every day and without much thought. During stressful times, our breath may become shorter and quicker. Through practice, however, we can take control of our breath and use it to relax. Vicky Drolet, owner of the Namaste Yoga Studio Montcalm, will lead a Self-care Workshop on Meditation and Breathwork in-person at the Wellness Centre.
Learn about the philosophy of meditation and breathwork, and their benefits on body and mind. Try out various breathing exercises and techniques. This will be an interactive activity featuring both movements and explanations, and you will be welcome ask questions at any time.
You will need comfortable clothes, a bottle of water, a yoga mat and a blanket or cushion.
We require you to register for this workshop as places are limited to a maximum of 15 participants.

Become a thespian for a day as the Lifelong Learning room transforms into the Globe Theatre with a reading of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Each week, participants will choose a character at random to read aloud while our facilitator, Meb Reisner, discusses the play. Join us for all four sessions and receive a door prize at the end!
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s finest plays. We will be exploring the conscience and the effect of guilt on the human mind. Macbeth explores reality and illusion; witchcraft and kingship; the natural order; light and life; darkness and death. A perfect play to discover in October!

VEQ, in partnership with the Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Community Centre, will be hosting chair yoga classes in the Northern Perimeter. Running from September 14th to December 14th, the classes will be held from 9:30 to 10:30am. A chair yoga session compliments a guided meditation during this 50 minute-long class. Birthing a child is an historic family occasion. It can be a very emotional, awesome and even stressful time for parents-to-be. The Wellness Centre is here to support you, especially in this unusual time. Pandemic or not, everyone needs to be ready for baby’s arrival.
Get ready for birth by attending four Prenatal Information Meetings given by the perinatal team from Jeffery Hale Community Services.
Due to COVID-19 and the most recent government measures that will be in place, it is yet to be decided if the meetings will take place online or in person, or both. The decision will be taken one month prior to the meetings.

Who We Are
Travellin’ Toddler Time (TTT) is free activity in English for children 3 and 4 years old and their parents/caregivers or grandparents. Participants sing songs, hear stories, make crafts and enjoy a snack. This activity is run by the Quebec City Reading Council ( QCRC) and the location rotates every month. Be sure to check the location for each activity.
