Caregiver’s Cafe: The January Blahs…Or is it Depression?
Jan 15 @ 10:00 AM

It’s normal to feel that after-holiday let down when all the festivities of the season end, the credit card bills roll in, and the coldest weather, snow, and ice make us housebound. The feelings of melancholy accompanying this period are commonly known as the January Blahs. When should we take notice that the January Blahs are more serious or have turned into depression? Depression is a mood disorder accompanied by feelings of sadness, anger, and loss that can affect a person’s every-day activities. Sadness doesn’t always mean depression. Join us for this timely videoconference with  presenter, Yvonne Clark, Clinical Social Worker and Grief Counselor, to learn more about the difference between feeling down or blue and full-blown depression.

Online Doula Session
Apr 8 @ 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Expecting a baby in the midst of a pandemic is certainly not something any of us ever wished for!  It is, however, a current reality for many local English-speaking parents-to-be.  The Wellness Centre is here to support you in this highly unusual time.

We’re in the process of setting up a FREE  online session  with Camille Nadeau, a bilingual doula, to take place on April 8, 2020. Learn all about Camille in a recent article about her in the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph newspaper. Our goal  is to answer your questions and help better prepare you for labour and delivery as you welcome your little one.  We also hope to help you connect with other expectant parents who are living the same reality.

Topics to be covered

Camille Nadeau will cover these topics in this online doula session:

  • The current situation in the local obstetric system at CHULSFA and the MDN de la Capitale-Nationale.
  • How to prepare for the ideal birth you had in mind given this new reality.
  • Tips and advice on how to handle stress before, during and after delivery.
  • Suggestions for your life partners: tips to help them during labour.

Questions to get to you know you better

To make the session as useful to you as possible, please answer these questions when you register by email:

  1. Where are you giving birth?
  2. What is your due date?
  3. Is this your first birth?  If not, what are the ages of your other children?
  4. Are you planning to breastfeed?
  5. Are you planning on a natural birth, or are you open to analgesics or anaesthesia?
  6. Write down three words to describe your ideal birth.
  7. Tell us your biggest concern.
  8. Other questions? And remember, parents-to-be, there is no such thing as a silly question!

Special notes and how to register

No personal, medical questions: please keep those to ask your doctor or midwife.

Each session is limited to 10 families, so register today by emailing Jan Anderson, Community Organizer: janderson@jhpartners.net and don’t forget to include your answers to the above questions!

It can take many forms and be intentional or unintentional. Sometimes mistreatment  can be  hard

to recognize or assess. It’s important for us to become more aware and protect ourselves and others from elder abuse,  ageism and mistreatment. Learn more about this important subject with  François Desmeules, CIUSSSCN Social Worker and Facilitator with the It’s Not Right! outreach program.

Caregiver Empowerment – 1, 2, 3 (Online)
Jun 10 @ 7:00 PM

Pre-registration is necessary!

Do you feel  bit like a cocooned  caterpillar in the midst of  these unusual pandemic circumstances ? What if you took this time to empower yourself by linking with other caregivers?

Consider joining  a series of online caregiving  sessions to help you  face the future with a new mind set and greater resilience for what lies ahead.  All you need is a smart phone, tablet or laptop with webcam. You can also join by landline, if you prefer.

Our facilitator Jeannie Potter, Interpersonal  Coach, former occupational therapist with a specialty in mental health and a caregiver herself, will guide participants  through the following sessions.

Session 1 – April 22:            Moving Beyond Survival Mode

Accept the invitation to dream bigger. Identify what you would like to have more of in life and what you want less of, especially in this unusual period of confinement and reflection. Recognize what drains you? Provide and obtain support from other caregivers while learning to value those things that are personally motivating and energizing.

Session 2 – May 13:             Exploring Stressors and Strengths

Discover how to use your strengths to creatively manage personal and collective problems and challenges. Learn how to develop  new strategies to thrive in the midst of a pandemic.

Session 3 – June 10 :             Supporting  Yourself in Difficult Times

Explore researched practices that involve changing our brain and behaviour through new mindsets and experiences. Learn how to support yourself and others in life-changing ways.
