Tuesday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. – Back in the Day book launch at the Community Centre, 1743 Boulevard Valcartier, Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier. This is the result of a year-long project to bring together students and seniors and share stories about “back in the day.” Followed by a buffet supper. |
The activity is open to all English-speaking adults age 50 and over. Membership is not required. Please join Lifelong Learning as we explore a new project in collaboration with Université Laval Department of Music. Prior musical experience is not necessary – this workshop is founded on the idea that we are ALL musicians. Music-making: Explore fun and creative music-making with drumming, rock band, and digital musical instruments. Participants will have the chance to try a selection of musical instruments. Learning well-known songs: Using rock band instruments, participants will be able to play a song together within 5 minutes. Improvisation: Creative improvisation using a ‘touchless’ instrument using motion sensor technology. Song-writing: By the end of the workshops, participants will have created their own song, and will have new knowledge about how to access and use iPad music Apps. These workshops are exploratory ‘pilot’ sessions for a research project about lifelong musical learning. Previous research has demonstrated the power of music for positive quality of life among adults. Your participation in this research is extremely valuable and will help us to develop inclusive and meaningful musical activities. Participants will be asked to take part in the research, and those who agree will take part in a questionnaire, interview, and a focus group. PARKING IS FREE! To Register, please email or call Meghan at Lifelong Learning <info@lifelonglearningquebec.org>or 418.681.1258.</info@lifelonglearningquebec.org> |

Do you have a close tie with someone living with memory loss? If so, you are not alone. The Alzheimers’ Society of Canada tells us that the disease affects 1.1 M Canadians directly or indirectly. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias slowly erode a person’s ability to communicate. Memory impairment can be isolating for the one experiencing it as well as for those providing caring. Conversations may become awkward and frustrating. You may feel tempted to give up trying to connect. Communication with a person with Alzheimer’s requires patience, understanding and good listening skills. Join us as Geneviève Gaboury, Counsellor with la Société Alzheimer de Québec, presents effective, supportive ways to help you and the person with dementia understand each other better. Learn how to become part of a new wave to make our daily conversations more inclusive!
This free event is taking place in collaboration with Life Long Learning and will be held at Eastern Quebec Learning Centre (3005, rue William Stuart, Quebec, QC G1W 1V4) in room 118 on Wednesday, June 19 starting at 10 am. Nearly one in four adult Canadians report some hearing loss. In older adults, hearing loss often happens gradually over time. This loss can easily go undetected. It may interfere with communication and often leaves seniors feeling quite isolated and misunderstood. It can become a common source of frustration for caregivers. However, support is available. Join us for a joint information session with a hearing care specialist and the Association des personnes avec une déficience de l’audition. It’s normal to feel that after-holiday let down when all the festivities of the season end, the credit card bills roll in, and the coldest weather, snow, and ice make us housebound. The feelings of melancholy accompanying this period are commonly known as the January Blahs. When should we take notice that the January Blahs are more serious or have turned into depression? Depression is a mood disorder accompanied by feelings of sadness, anger, and loss that can affect a person’s every-day activities. Sadness doesn’t always mean depression. Join us for this timely videoconference with presenter, Yvonne Clark, Clinical Social Worker and Grief Counselor, to learn more about the difference between feeling down or blue and full-blown depression.
