Her use of language and form is unique, as is her skill with the application of sparse wording, which leads to a tremendous impact being felt by her reader.”
THE AUTHOR

Her scholarly publications include Novelas familiares: Figuraciones de la nación en la novela latinoamericana contemporánea (2004), Memory Matters in Transitional Perú (2014), and Despadre: masculinidades, travestismos y ficciones de la ley en la literatura peruana (2021). She has also published the poetry collection Corazón de hojalata/Tin Heart (2017), which received the Luces award for the best Peruvian poetry collection of the year. She is currently working on an essay on medical interventions entitled Of Monsters and Cyborgs and a multi-genre memoir on the experience of heart transplantation. She has been recognized twice by the Council of Excellence in Teaching and Learning and received the 2022 Amauta Tumi Award for outstanding teachers granted by the Peruvian community in the U.S. She has been a fellow of the UIC Institute for the Humanities on three occasions, including this year for her project on illness and writing. The novel will be read and discussed in parts over three sessions:
Part I: | Saturday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m. |
Part II: | Saturday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. |

Come discover the “first Canadian novel”!
Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague (1769) has been described as “the first Canadian novel.” Written in epistolary form, the fascinating story depicts life in eighteenth-century Quebec City from the perspectives of British heroine Emily Montague and her friends. The novel sheds light on the relationship between French, English, and Indigenous cultures, changing gender roles, and the differences between North America and England. “Any way you read it…the novel is still able to instruct and delight.” (Borealis Press).
The novel will be read and discussed in parts over three sessions:
Part I: | Saturday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m. |
Part II: | Saturday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. |
Parts III & IV: | Saturday, April 27 at 4:30 p.m. |
This activity is in partnership with the English literature program in the Département de littérature, théâtre et cinéma at Université Laval. Copies of The History of Emily Montague can be purchased through the bookstore La Maison Anglaise. An e-book version is also available for Morrin Centre members through OverDrive HERE.

How can we make sense of the world and maintain hope for the future? Come share your ideas, what you’re reading and writing, and how they help. Discover how Jean-Louis Trudel, a science fiction author and professor, and Michèle Thibeau, creative writer, sustain their own optimism. They will discuss creative non-fiction and science fiction, including hopepunk and solarpunk, that outline new courses of action in optimistic works.
If you believe good writing and surprising scenarios can help bridge the gap, preparing us for possible futures, join us at Morrin Centre on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 6 pm.
Jean-Louis Trudel has been writing science fiction since 1984, and he’s been following climate change for almost as long. While he’s been teaching university students about it for twenty years, he feels we need to propose kinder and brighter futures, both to science fiction audiences and to younger generations.
This event is in partnership with Lifelong Learning, a program by Québec City Reading Council, and is open to all 50+ LLL members.
Take a moment to pause as we carve out some essential time in our busy week. Let’s release the tensions and pressures of everyday life and inhale deeply. This is your moment. Resources about reading and mental health:
Mindfulness is the art and practice of of being fully aware of what’s happening in the moment – emotionally, cognitively, in any way! It involves nourishing the capacity to be conscious of what you’re doing and of what is happening around you, as well as inside you, with open curiosity, kindness and an attitude of non-judgement. Mindfulness can be particularly helpful during stressful times because it can help us step back from our stormy minds, procide a calmer perspective, and reveal healthier choices available to use. It can also help when we need to focus on a difficult or complicated task by reducing the ‘chatter’ of our internal monologue. While it may come naturally to some, mindfulness takes practice to master.
Join professional psychologist Dr. Meagan Daley in-person at the Wellness Centre at Jeffery Hale for a 1.5-hour session in Mindfulness.
