If you’re aged 13-25 years old, join us on Zoom during Mental Health Week for a Jack Talk. Help end the silence around mental health!
Jack Talks are mental health presentations delivered by young people to young people. Trained and certified youth speakers use the power of personal stories and mental health education to inspire, engage, educate and equip young people to look out for themselves and their peers.
Fun fact: 80% of Jack Talks audiences say they walk away with a better understanding of their mental well-being. Now, that’s a win-win!
On the agenda? Topics like bullying, dealing with depression, self-esteem, 2SLGBTQ, and more, from academic stress to immigrant experiences. We’ve got it all covered!
Parents are welcome to join too.
About the speakers
Mary Feltham: Mary is a graduate from Grenfell Camps, obtaining a BSc in Psychology and BSc in Nursing. Now Mary lives with their many animals, and works as the chairperson for the Canadian Federation of Students – Newfoundland and Labrador, advocating for the rights of all students.
Mara So: By day, Mara is a Lab Manager for a cognitive psychology lab at Dalhousie University. She graduated from Dalhousie in 2020 with a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience and a Certificate in Animal Behaviour. By night, she crafts, cosplays, and takes care of her 2 year-old Golden Retriever named Rocco. In addition to volunteering as a Jack Talks speaker for Jack.org, she also volunteers as an EAL tutor for ISANS, and as a Crisis Responder for Kids Help Phone.

Did you know that reading is good for your mental health as well as for your interpersonal relationships? For instance, psychologists from the New School for Social Research noted in 2013 that reading literature improved one’s ability to register and read other people’s emotions.
The Morrin Centre welcomes visitors during its regular library hours to explore book displays on mental health (free for members; $5 for non-members). Current Library hours are: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are located at 44 Chaussée des Écossais, Québec, QC G1R 4H3. Mindfulness is the art and practice of of being fully aware of what’s happening in the moment – emotionally, cognitively, in any way! It involves nourishing the capacity to be conscious of what you’re doing and of what is happening around you, as well as inside you, with open curiosity, kindness and an attitude of non-judgement. Mindfulness can be particularly helpful during stressful times because it can help us step back from our stormy minds, procide a calmer perspective, and reveal healthier choices available to use. It can also help when we need to focus on a difficult or complicated task by reducing the ‘chatter’ of our internal monologue. While it may come naturally to some, mindfulness takes practice to master.
