The Quebec Conferences were two in a series of high-level strategic meetings held by Allied leaders during World War II, the first from 10-24 August 1943 and the second from 11 to 16 September 1944. The future course of the war was planned at these meetings where Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to Quebec City to discuss war strategies. The Russian attack on Ukraine and the Ukrainians’ amazing resistance is one of the most extraordinary and important events of our lifetime. Its impact will resonate on the world for decades to come. For over a decade Barry has been studying Russian and Ukrainian history, and has travelled extensively in both countries. He is in daily contact with Ukrainian friends and follows the war closely, both on a political and military level.
This illustrated presentation, of forty minutes duration, shows wartime life in the famous Ukrainian city of Odesa and then moves on to a 2015 trip to Moscow to view the 70th anniversary parade of Russia’s winning of the Great Patriotic War. (WWII) Some of the photos are astonishing.

CANADIAN PACIFIC AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL
The story of Canadian Pacific is one of the greatest stories in the world. Straddling the continent for more than a century and globe for more than fifty years, Canadian Pacific is inextricably linked with the history of Canada itself.
In 1885, the company completed the construction of two thousand miles of railway system and linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. It then established fleets of vessels on both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, laying the foundation for a transportation route that allowed members of the British Empire to travel around the world. To enhance the travel experience, the company also constructed great castle-like hotels, including the Algonquin in St. Andrews, the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, and the Banff Springs Hotel in the Rockies, which themselves became landmarks.
With a 40 minute illustrated presentation, author and lecturer, Barry Lane will relate this special history, and then go on to talk about his experiences as a cruise ship lecturer and leader of Trans-Canada rail trip journeys. (He has lectured on at least 200 different cruises in Canada, the US, and the Caribbean, and been leader/lecturer of 15 rail trips across Canada, all of which stayed in CP’s great railway hotels. He will give you some travel trips for your future travels.
As a door prize to the talk, Barry will also offer a copy of his “sumptuously illustrated,” 2015 book, “Canadian Pacific and the Golden Age of Travel

This lecture discusses the art of five 19th Century female painters who worked during the Impressionist period, mainly in France. This artistic style focused on capturing an informal effect or “impression” of a subject, rather than a studied and formal representation. At the time, it was heavily criticized by the artistic establishment, who felt it was a rejection of true art. Today, Impressionist painting is hugely popular and the works of Monet, Sisley, Renoir and Manet, among others, command high prices. As is often the case, the women artists who worked at that time are much less known and valued. This lecture describes their struggle for recognition and demonstrates why they should not be forgotten.
This is a hybrid event, our presenter will be joining us via Zoom, however members are welcome to attend in person in the Lifelong Learning room at EQLC.
