Join us for our series of talks in honour of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary. A New Account of Western Canadian Authorship: The Poetry of Margaret Laurence’s Mother-in-LawWhat models of being a writer were available to the young Margaret Laurence (1926–87) in the years leading up to her breakthrough novel, The Stone Angel (1964)? What structures of publishing and authorship were in place to support such an achievement by a woman from the Prairies? Among the Western Canadian authors of the Depression and the interwar period was one whom Margaret particularly acknowledged as a mentor – her husband Jack’s mother, Elsie Fry Laurence (1893–1982). Examining Elsie’s books and periodical contributions sheds new light on the possibilities and limits of being an author in Western Canada. This talk will trace Elsie’s life and career – through her romantic novel written as a governess in imperial Russia, her contributions to the Edmonton Journal and Alberta Poetry Year Book, her Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books, and her later fiction – to show how she carved out a practice of imagining the key roles played by women in rural Canada, a theme that would deeply inspire Margaret. In addition to her books, this account draws on interviews and correspondence with Elsie’s surviving children and grandchildren, thereby assembling an archive for a talented poet whom literary criticism has until now overlooked.
Presenter BiographyEli MacLaren teaches poetry, Canadian literature, and the history of books and publishing in the Department of English at McGill University, where he is currently the director of graduate studies. He is the author of Dominion and Agency: Copyright and the Structuring of the Canadian Book Trade, 1867–1918 (2011) and Little Resilience: The Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books (2020). He is the vice-president of the Bibliographical Society of Canada and a co-researcher at the Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le livre au Québec. As the director of the Montreal International Poetry Prize, he co-ordinates a team of students and colleagues in building the international network for contemporary poetry.

Join us for our series of talks celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
Recounting some fascinating stories behind well-known songs from the past, award-winning singer-songwriter Rob Lutes will lead a curated chronological tour through some of the major movements in Western popular music, from its earliest iterations in America in the 18th and 19th centuries, through the arrival of new genres like ragtime and blues, the flowering of Tin Pan Alley and the birth of Rock and Roll. To mark the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary, Rob will also play and talk about some of the music in Quebec over this period.
About Rob Lutes
Since his first album, Gravity, Rob Lutes has steadily built a collection of exquisite songs that inhabit the intersection of blues, folk, Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter genre. Lutes released his 8th album, Come Around, in April 2021. It was nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards and won Lutes his second CFMA for Contemporary Singer of the Year. He has had his songs recorded by many other artists.

Join us for a Library Lectures event in honour of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary! Ann Shteir will present a talk titled “Women and Botany in 19th-Century Canada.” Learn more and register HERE.
Celebrating Historical Research and Historical Researchers: Women and Botany in 19th-Century Canada. An Illustrated Talk
Papers in the Transactions of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec from the 1820s and 1830s are historical documents by individuals in early 19th-century Canada who were searching for knowledge about nature in a “new land” and who also wanted to “excite in the rising generation a taste for scientific knowledge and pursuits.” Two women were among the researchers: Christian Ramsay (Countess Dalhousie), who contributed a “Catalogue of Canadian Plants collected in 1827,” and Harriet Sheppard (“Mrs. Sheppard”), who wrote about shells and Canadian songbirds in Quebec and had a keen interest in plants.
This talk celebrates women who pursued knowledge of nature, especially knowledge about plants, in 19th-century Canada. It features Lady Dalhousie and Anne Mary Perceval in Quebec, Catharine Parr Traill and Alice Hollingworth in Ontario, and Mary Brenton in Newfoundland. Who were they? How did they come to know about plants? What were their contributions? What did their work mean to them? How do we find them? And where do we find material by them and about them?
Presenter Biography
Ann Shteir is a Professor Emerita in the School of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at York University. In 2016, she received an Honorary Law degree from York University for her work in developing the university’s pioneering graduate program in Gender, Feminist, and Women’s Studies.
