Postcards from Quebec: South & Central America
Jan 28 @ 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Postcards from Quebec – Cultural Fairs – South and Central America

The fifth event of the Postcards from Quebec series will take place at the Morrin Centre on January 28, from 1 to 3 p.m.. Join us to enjoy music, art, and snacks from South and Central America, as well as a concert and talk by Federico Tarazona! All activities are free.

The Charango and Andean Music

In Peru, there’s a strong tradition related to the musical instrument known as the charango that goes far back in history. It’s a unique tradition making the charango, without a doubt, one of the most characteristic and popular musical instruments of Andean culture.
This concert and talk focuses on musical traditions of the Andes, notably, on the charango, a string instrument most likely originally created according to and inspired by the 17th century Spanish baroque guitar. Federico Tarazona has created his own version of the instrument, named hatun charango (grand charango), a new variant in the instrument family offering more possibilities than the traditional charango when it comes to harmonies and polyphony.

Renowned for his exciting interpretation, extraordinary technique and musical expression, Federico Tarazona is considered one of the world’s finest Andean charango virtuosos, and one of the most important South-American composers of his generation.

Lifelong Learning – Empires of the North: The Fur Trade in Canada
Feb 22 @ 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
This event is open to all adults age 50+ in the Quebec City area.

FACILITATOR: Barry Lane

The North American fur trade is one of the world’s great stories.  For Canada it was crucial, forming for a long time the basis of our economy and ultimately creating the very borders of our country. And for our native peoples it was even more so.  It was their trade.  They were the ones that went out and got the furs and then bought the goods that were traded for them.  For many of them, for over 200 years, it was the only contact with whites that they had, and it prepared them for what was to come as the settler population moved further west.  As one Chief said.  These were the ties that bind.—From Montreal’s fur brigades with French Canadian voyageurs paddling their heavily laden freight canoes 3,000 miles across the continent, to the Scotsmen of the famous Hudson Bay’s Company, the world’s oldest incorporated enterprise, this 45 minute presentation captures the romance and extraordinary achievement of this early period of Canadian history.

Building Our Community: Architecture
Feb 22 @ 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Come enjoy our historical talk series Building our Community, where we will take a look at the past, present and, in some cases, future of the English-language community institutions that have contributed to the development of Quebec city. From our past educational institutions to our modern medical institutions and so much more, our community has a lot of history to share! Come one and all to meet our specialists and learn more about how our community evolved and came to be through its intitutions.

Our Guest

David Mendel, who retired as President of Mendel Tours in 2019, studied at York University in Toronto and at the University of Paris, before moving to Quebec City in 1976. After completing a master’s thesis in Art History and undertaking doctoral studies at Laval University, he became co-founder of Mendel Tours in 1984. He is often called upon to give talks about the history of Quebec at international conferences and has given numerous tours of the city for visiting dignitaries.

A resident of Quebec’s historic district since 1976, he is very involved in preservation issues. He is President of the Foundation of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity ─ the first Anglican Cathedral to have been built outside the British Isles. He is the author of a best-selling series of guidebooks devoted to Quebec City and its surrounding region: Quebec: World Heritage City (2009); Quebec, Birthplace of New France (2012); The Seminary of Quebec, A Living Heritage (2013); Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (2015); Le Château Frontenac, in the Heart of Old Quebec (2018); and co-author, with François Tremblay and Judy Bross, of Charlevoix, a Tradition of Hospitality (2018).

Lifelong Learning – Canada Invaded: German U-Boats in the St. Lawrence
Mar 21 @ 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM

This event is open to all adults age 50+ in the Quebec City area.

FACILITATOR: Barry Lane

During the summer of 1942, German U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and sank over two dozen Allied ships. The devastation was so great that the British Admiralty had to order the shutdown of the whole St. Lawrence system.

Based on the logs, and interviews with the surviving U-boat commanders, this illustrated lecture describes the extraordinary circumstances under which this campaign took place.  It also relates several German spy missions in Canada waters and an incredible breakout of captured German submarine commanders from their camp in Ontario. Hans Rudel, the most highly decorated German service man of WWII, U-505, the most unlucky submarine to have ever sailed, and Marlene Dietrich’s “Lilly Marlene” are all part of this presentation.

My Morrin: Imagining Hopeful Futures – Author Event with Jean-Louis Trudel
May 5 @ 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

How can we make sense of the world and maintain hope for the future? Come share your ideas, what you’re reading and writing, and how they help. Discover how Jean-Louis Trudel, a science fiction author and professor, and Michèle Thibeau, creative writer, sustain their own optimism. They will discuss creative non-fiction and science fiction, including hopepunk and solarpunk, that outline new courses of action in optimistic works.

If you believe good writing and surprising scenarios can help bridge the gap, preparing us for possible futures, join us at Morrin Centre on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 6 pm.

Register here!

Jean-Louis Trudel has been writing science fiction since 1984, and he’s been following climate change for almost as long. While he’s been teaching university students about it for twenty years, he feels we need to propose kinder and brighter futures, both to science fiction audiences and to younger generations.

Come learn about Canada’s first novel at our half-day symposium aimed to inform and delight. We ask: what value is there in reading Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague today?

First published in 1769 and set in what eventually became Quebec City, this epistolary novel gives an intimate glimpse of social life just after the British conquest of New France. It is inspired by the writer’s own experience.

Offering insights on relations among the English, the Canadiens, and the Huron-Wendat, the novel reveals both progressive views and racial prejudices of the period through interwoven love stories. It sheds light on a complicated colonial past whose legacy continues to challenge us. The invited speakers will help us address important facets of the novel: Donald Fyson (specialist in 18th–20th century Quebec history at Université Laval), Linda M. Morra (specialist in Canadian women’s literature at Bishop’s University), Jean-Philip Rochon Paul (Huron-Wendat Nation), Peter Sabor (Canada Research Chair in Eighteenth-Century Studies at McGill University), and Philip Sioui (Huron-Wendat Nation).

The talks will be accompanied by dramatic readings. A character actor and a touch of period music will add a flavour of the time. Whether you have read the novel or not, whether you are a member of the public or a specialist in the field, you are sure to come away with new perspectives on a novel which has continued to engage generations of readers.

More information about the presenters and their talks coming soon!

Today, Maine is a quiet place on the periphery, seen by many of us as a recreational paradise of wilderness, mountains and sea. But at one time, the state was not on the periphery, but at the centre of the United States. it would not only lead the union but ultimately save it. it is an extraordinary history.
