Symposium: “The History of Emily Montague”
May 11 @ 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Any way you read it…the novel is still able to instruct and delight.
–Borealis Press

Come learn about Canada’s first novel at our half-day symposium aimed to inform and delight. We ask: what value is there in reading Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague today?

First published in 1769 and set in what eventually became Quebec City, this epistolary novel gives an intimate glimpse of social life just after the British conquest of New France. It is inspired by the writer’s own experience.

Offering insights on relations among the English, the Canadiens, and the Huron-Wendat, the novel reveals both progressive views and racial prejudices of the period through interwoven love stories. It sheds light on a complicated colonial past whose legacy continues to challenge us. The invited speakers will help us address important facets of the novel: Donald Fyson (specialist in 18th–20th century Quebec history at Université Laval), Linda M. Morra (specialist in Canadian women’s literature at Bishop’s University), Jean-Philip Rochon Paul (Huron-Wendat Nation), Peter Sabor (Canada Research Chair in Eighteenth-Century Studies at McGill University), and Philip Sioui (Huron-Wendat Nation).

The talks will be accompanied by dramatic readings. A character actor and a touch of period music will add a flavour of the time. Whether you have read the novel or not, whether you are a member of the public or a specialist in the field, you are sure to come away with new perspectives on a novel which has continued to engage generations of readers.

More information about the presenters and their talks coming soon!

Audio Storytelling Workshop: The Art of Interviewing
Jun 8 @ 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Interested in podcasting?

Join us on Saturday, June 8 from 10am – 3pm for this introductory workshop.

To register: https://forms.office.com/r/p97nSYZMhU

Bring your own lunch. Light refreshments provided.

Workshop description:

Interviewing guests is an essential podcasting skill.

How do we put our interviewees at ease even as we point a microphone at them? How can we structure our interview questions to provoke deeper reflections and help interviewees emotionally connect to their story? How do we ensure that our interview audio is clear and compelling and grabs listeners’ ears with nothing more than the phone in your pocket?

In this workshop, Glenn Patterson, an ethnographer and public-sector heritage worker, shares some of the secrets of oral history interviewing that he has learned firsthand over the last 15 years from veteran audio storytellers and radio producers.

This workshop is a partnership between Community Digital Arts Hub – CDAH and VEQ as part of the CDAH in the Regions project funded by the Government of Canada and supported by ELAN Quebec.

Library Lectures: Eli MacLaren – Morrin Centre
Sep 26 @ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Join us for our series of talks in honour of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary.

A New Account of Western Canadian Authorship: The Poetry of Margaret Laurence’s Mother-in-Law

What models of being a writer were available to the young Margaret Laurence (1926–87) in the years leading up to her breakthrough novel, The Stone Angel (1964)? What structures of publishing and authorship were in place to support such an achievement by a woman from the Prairies? Among the Western Canadian authors of the Depression and the interwar period was one whom Margaret particularly acknowledged as a mentor – her husband Jack’s mother, Elsie Fry Laurence (1893–1982). Examining Elsie’s books and periodical contributions sheds new light on the possibilities and limits of being an author in Western Canada. This talk will trace Elsie’s life and career – through her romantic novel written as a governess in imperial Russia, her contributions to the Edmonton Journal and Alberta Poetry Year Book, her Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books, and her later fiction – to show how she carved out a practice of imagining the key roles played by women in rural Canada, a theme that would deeply inspire Margaret. In addition to her books, this account draws on interviews and correspondence with Elsie’s surviving children and grandchildren, thereby assembling an archive for a talented poet whom literary criticism has until now overlooked.

He is the author of Dominion and Agency: Copyright and the Structuring of the Canadian Book Trade, 1867–1918 (2011) and Little Resilience: The Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books (2020). Kanga gym: Group 2
Oct 19 @ 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

The image shows two young children, a boy and a girl, playing in a colorful indoor gym or playroom. The boy, wearing a blue shirt and dark shorts, and the girl, wearing a white dress, are both smiling and holding onto a wooden climbing frame. The background is filled with various play equipment, including hula hoops, a small basketball hoop, colorful balls, and wall-mounted climbing bars. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful, suggesting a fun and safe environment for kids to play and exercise.

Note: Due to high demand, we have added a second group for this activity.

Group 1: 9:15-10:15 a.m. ( FULL!)

Group 2: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Join us for our first-ever toddler gym class. Kanga Gym is an activity designed for toddlers aged 2 to 5 that focuses on developing your child’s gross motor skills while giving them a chance to have fun with others. These parent-child sessions also provide an excellent opportunity for you to connect with your child as they navigate the stations.

What your kiddos will practice
  • Climbing on our new Montessori climbing structures
  • Jumping
  • Balance
  • Coordination

Kanga Gym is a unique approach that will challenge your child’s physical and emotional abilities in a fun and social setting.
