Come enjoy our historical talk series Building our Community, where we will take a look at the past, present and, in some cases, future of the English-language community institutions that have contributed to the development of Quebec city. From our past educational institutions to our modern medical institutions and so much more, our community has a lot of history to share! Come one and all to meet our specialists and learn more about how our community evolved and came to be through its intitutions.
Our Guest
David Mendel, who retired as President of Mendel Tours in 2019, studied at York University in Toronto and at the University of Paris, before moving to Quebec City in 1976. After completing a master’s thesis in Art History and undertaking doctoral studies at Laval University, he became co-founder of Mendel Tours in 1984. He is often called upon to give talks about the history of Quebec at international conferences and has given numerous tours of the city for visiting dignitaries.
A resident of Quebec’s historic district since 1976, he is very involved in preservation issues. He is President of the Foundation of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity ─ the first Anglican Cathedral to have been built outside the British Isles. He is the author of a best-selling series of guidebooks devoted to Quebec City and its surrounding region: Quebec: World Heritage City (2009); Quebec, Birthplace of New France (2012); The Seminary of Quebec, A Living Heritage (2013); Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (2015); Le Château Frontenac, in the Heart of Old Quebec (2018); and co-author, with François Tremblay and Judy Bross, of Charlevoix, a Tradition of Hospitality (2018).

How can we make sense of the world and maintain hope for the future? Come share your ideas, what you’re reading and writing, and how they help. Discover how Jean-Louis Trudel, a science fiction author and professor, and Michèle Thibeau, creative writer, sustain their own optimism. They will discuss creative non-fiction and science fiction, including hopepunk and solarpunk, that outline new courses of action in optimistic works.
If you believe good writing and surprising scenarios can help bridge the gap, preparing us for possible futures, join us at Morrin Centre on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 6 pm.
Jean-Louis Trudel has been writing science fiction since 1984, and he’s been following climate change for almost as long. While he’s been teaching university students about it for twenty years, he feels we need to propose kinder and brighter futures, both to science fiction audiences and to younger generations.

Any way you read it…the novel is still able to instruct and delight.
–Borealis Press
Come learn about Canada’s first novel at our half-day symposium aimed to inform and delight. We ask: what value is there in reading Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague today?
First published in 1769 and set in what eventually became Quebec City, this epistolary novel gives an intimate glimpse of social life just after the British conquest of New France. It is inspired by the writer’s own experience.
Offering insights on relations among the English, the Canadiens, and the Huron-Wendat, the novel reveals both progressive views and racial prejudices of the period through interwoven love stories. It sheds light on a complicated colonial past whose legacy continues to challenge us. The invited speakers will help us address important facets of the novel: Donald Fyson (specialist in 18th–20th century Quebec history at Université Laval), Linda M. Morra (specialist in Canadian women’s literature at Bishop’s University), Jean-Philip Rochon Paul (Huron-Wendat Nation), Peter Sabor (Canada Research Chair in Eighteenth-Century Studies at McGill University), and Philip Sioui (Huron-Wendat Nation).
The talks will be accompanied by dramatic readings. A character actor and a touch of period music will add a flavour of the time. Whether you have read the novel or not, whether you are a member of the public or a specialist in the field, you are sure to come away with new perspectives on a novel which has continued to engage generations of readers.
More information about the presenters and their talks coming soon!

Interested in podcasting?
Join us on Saturday, June 8 from 10am – 3pm for this introductory workshop.
To register: https://forms.office.com/r/p97nSYZMhU
Bring your own lunch. Light refreshments provided.
Workshop description:
Interviewing guests is an essential podcasting skill.
How do we put our interviewees at ease even as we point a microphone at them? How can we structure our interview questions to provoke deeper reflections and help interviewees emotionally connect to their story? How do we ensure that our interview audio is clear and compelling and grabs listeners’ ears with nothing more than the phone in your pocket?
In this workshop, Glenn Patterson, an ethnographer and public-sector heritage worker, shares some of the secrets of oral history interviewing that he has learned firsthand over the last 15 years from veteran audio storytellers and radio producers.
This workshop is a partnership between Community Digital Arts Hub – CDAH and VEQ as part of the CDAH in the Regions project funded by the Government of Canada and supported by ELAN Quebec.
Come experience The Archive of Missing Things, part live performance and part contemplative game, in the Morrin Centre’s exquisite Victorian library. Equipped with an iPad and a headset, you’ll explore a maze-like archive in search of the secret at its centre, guided by clues in a live performance happening discreetly around you. Created by Halifax’s acclaimed Zuppa Theatre with award-winning writer Kate Cayley, this performance, alongside a digital book and game, presents a mystery that is beautiful, wistful… and sometimes even a little eerie.
This project is made possible thanks to the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia, and Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Once there, we can grab some food or some ice cream (or both!) from the food trucks available or from the ice cream shop located one block away from the Quai, while getting to know each other! We will be returning on the 8:00 PM ferry (to Québec). We will bring board games to facilitate your interaction with others. At the Quai, there are 160 water jets, perfect to refresh you, so make sure you bring or wear your sandals or why not your swimsuit! If you are an avid photographer, you can also check out the Red stairs (193 steps) located two blocks away from the Quai, and admire the beauty of the view from atop. There is also a café near the Quai, not far from the ice cream shop. Feeling like picknicking? By all means, bring your own snacks and a picnic blanket or portable chairs!
The fees for the ferry ride are covered for participants and the event is open to all! Registration is required and we have a limited number of places.
The Ferris Wheel ride and any other purchases (like meals) are not covered.
Don’t miss the next VEQ Game Night on Friday, August 30. Hosted at the Jeffery Hale Pavilion from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., you can join other members of the English-speaking community (newcomers or not) for a fun, social evening with light refreshments provided. Join us for our series of talks in honour of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary. A New Account of Western Canadian Authorship: The Poetry of Margaret Laurence’s Mother-in-LawWhat models of being a writer were available to the young Margaret Laurence (1926–87) in the years leading up to her breakthrough novel, The Stone Angel (1964)? What structures of publishing and authorship were in place to support such an achievement by a woman from the Prairies? Among the Western Canadian authors of the Depression and the interwar period was one whom Margaret particularly acknowledged as a mentor – her husband Jack’s mother, Elsie Fry Laurence (1893–1982). Examining Elsie’s books and periodical contributions sheds new light on the possibilities and limits of being an author in Western Canada. This talk will trace Elsie’s life and career – through her romantic novel written as a governess in imperial Russia, her contributions to the Edmonton Journal and Alberta Poetry Year Book, her Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books, and her later fiction – to show how she carved out a practice of imagining the key roles played by women in rural Canada, a theme that would deeply inspire Margaret. In addition to her books, this account draws on interviews and correspondence with Elsie’s surviving children and grandchildren, thereby assembling an archive for a talented poet whom literary criticism has until now overlooked.
Presenter BiographyEli MacLaren teaches poetry, Canadian literature, and the history of books and publishing in the Department of English at McGill University, where he is currently the director of graduate studies. He is the author of Dominion and Agency: Copyright and the Structuring of the Canadian Book Trade, 1867–1918 (2011) and Little Resilience: The Ryerson Poetry Chap-Books (2020). He is the vice-president of the Bibliographical Society of Canada and a co-researcher at the Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le livre au Québec. As the director of the Montreal International Poetry Prize, he co-ordinates a team of students and colleagues in building the international network for contemporary poetry.

Join us for our series of talks celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
Recounting some fascinating stories behind well-known songs from the past, award-winning singer-songwriter Rob Lutes will lead a curated chronological tour through some of the major movements in Western popular music, from its earliest iterations in America in the 18th and 19th centuries, through the arrival of new genres like ragtime and blues, the flowering of Tin Pan Alley and the birth of Rock and Roll. To mark the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th anniversary, Rob will also play and talk about some of the music in Quebec over this period.
About Rob Lutes
Since his first album, Gravity, Rob Lutes has steadily built a collection of exquisite songs that inhabit the intersection of blues, folk, Americana, and the contemporary singer-songwriter genre. Lutes released his 8th album, Come Around, in April 2021. It was nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards and won Lutes his second CFMA for Contemporary Singer of the Year. He has had his songs recorded by many other artists.
This event is made possible thanks to support from the Government of Canada.
