This week, play tourist in your own city as we go for lunch at the Cochon Dingue and then stroll about the Quartier Petit Champlain. Enjoy boutiques, outdoor art installations, and the beautiful architecture Quebec City has to offer.

Interpretive Hike for Newcomers

Eager to go for a hike to one of the most beautiful parks in the area? We are providing transportation to the Jacques-Cartier National Park, so if you recently* moved to the Greater Québec City region and would like to explore this place while making new friends, you only need to sign up!

If you are coming by car to the departing point (1270, chemin Sainte-Foy) you can park your vehicle for free in the parking lot behind the Jeffery Hale Pavilion. I will give you a parking ticket that will waive the fees. We will leave at 10:45 AM, so please plan accordingly. The bus will take us to the Discovery & Services Centre, situated on km 10 from the park’s entrance. The tour is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM. The interpretive tour will take two hours to be completed. Upon return to the Discovery Centre, participants can take some time to explore a bit more the picnic area, and the souvenir shop or simply relax while feeling the cool breeze of the Jacques-Cartier river.  We will head back to Québec City at 3:15 PM.

A naturalist guide will take us on a two-hour hike through the Les Cascades trail. It is categorized as an easy trail, perfect for beginners, a leisure walk, families, or sightseers, with a length of only 4 km.

VEQ will provide FREE transportation to all participants, as well as will cover the fee for the SÉPAQ naturalist. The interpretive hike will be in English (the naturalist guide is bilingual though). Each participant MUST obtain the ticket on Eventbrite. It is $9.25 per adult and free for minors (17-year-old and under). If you already have a valid annual pass to the SÉPAQ (Québec’s provincial parks), then please get your ticket using the child’s admission option.

What to bring:

Comfortable shoes and clothes, water, snacks, a change of clothes in case it rains, your smile!

Under the Giant Rocks Guided Tour for Newcomers

Let curiosity lead your way! This off-trail guided activity takes you on a one-hour impressive path, surrounded by ancient boulders, rocks, and minerals, all while learning about them.

If you are coming by car to the departing point (1270, chemin Sainte-Foy) you can park your vehicle for free in the parking lot behind the Jeffery Hale Pavilion. Upon arrival, we can have a quick pit stop (bathroom only), then hop on the bus again, which will take us to a further location, where the tour will begin. The tour is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM. The interpretive tour will take one hour to be completed. Upon return to the Discovery Centre, participants can take some time to explore a bit more the picnic area, and the souvenir shop or simply relax while feeling the cool breeze of the Jacques-Cartier river.  We will head back to Québec City at 2:15 PM.

This activity is recommended for kids 6 years or older. Adult participants are warned that this activity will be conducted in tight, closed, and sometimes dark spaces (squeezing between boulders for example). Please consider all this before confirming your attendance.  For a better idea of what to expect, you can watch this video.

Quebec Art Company Auditions

Auditions are being held for roles in the Quebec Art Company late-November production of The Game’s Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays, at Holland Elementary School, 940 Ave. Ernest-Gagnon. The cast calls for five women with an age range of 20 to 70 and three men in the same age group.

Welcome Back Tea: Lifelong Learning

This event is open to all adults age 50+ in the Quebec City area.

This year, Valcartier Military Centre in Ste. Foy is making their space available to LLL.   Please take note that for security reasons, you MUST register in advance, names of attendees will be forwarded to the Military Centre in advance. Those not registered will not be able to gain access to the event.

Enjoy a lovely cup of tea and light snacks with fellow Lifelong Learning members, QCRC staff and community partners. Whether you are renewing your membership or joining Lifelong Learning for the first time, this is a great opportunity to hear about upcoming activities and reconnect with friends.Tea and light snacks will be served.

Registration is required. RSVP by September 8th.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEES:Membership is $15 per year and payable on the day of the tea, guests are welcome at $5 per person. The $5 entrance fee will go towards the membership fee if a guest joins the prgramme before June 2023. If paying in cash, please try to bring the exact amount of $15.

Lifelong Learning: Thespian for a Day

Facilitator:Meb Reisner, Lifelong Learning Member

Session 1 of 4: Become a thespian for a day as the Lifelong Learning room transforms into the Globe Theatre with a reading of William Shakespeare’s“The Tempest”. Each week, participants will choose a character at random to read aloud while our facilitator discusses the play.

The Tempest is a “bewitching play” and Shakespeare’s final piece of work. The story concerns Miranda, a lovely young maiden, and Prospero, her philosophical old magician father, who dwell on an enchanted island, alone except for their servants: Ariel (an invisible spirit) and Caliban (a monstrous witch’s son). The Tempest contains some of Shakespeare’s most familiar and oft-quoted lines and is a story of comedy, romance, and reconciliation.

Would you like to spend some time and share experiences with others like you? Professional photographer Cagdas Yoldas https://www.cagdasyoldas.com will teach you some photography tips while you are exploring and shooting photos at the most beautiful spots in Parc du Bois-de-Coulonge. This photo walk requires only minimum gear (cell phone friendly).  However, if you have a camera, feel free to bring it with you!

Picture This – Photography Fundamentals

Discover the fundamentals of photography with professional photographer Jacques Gaines.

With the help of professional photographer Jacques Gaines, the Morrin Centre offers a series of five photography workshops. Each workshop will present a different aspect of photography, from framing to photo-editing.

In this workshop, Gaines will be introducing participants to the fundamentals of photography.

Participants may either audit the workshop (attend just to watch) or bring the following items to actively participate in the exercises:

A camera. Whether a $100 camera or a $5000 camera, we do not care. Anything goes! It can even be your phone, though it should then be a fairly recent phone.
The picture you are most proud of. It can be a digital copy or a print. (You do not have to show it to the class).

In addition to that, please:
Dress for the weather outside. After the workshop, for those willing, the teacher will sometimes do a small photo walk if we have the time.
Make sure you have eaten before coming. It’s not fun having a student in a bad mood!

Facilitator: University Laval, hosted by Louise Lizotte, Marc Moreau and Nathalie Vaillancourt

This workshop presents genealogy, its origins in Quebec and the valuable contribution of its precursors. Participants also receive information about the Quebec Genealogy Society, how to join and the benefits of being part of it. After the two hour workshop you are welcome to stay and begin your own research for your ancestral lineage if you wish.

Poetry Soirée

Join poets from Quebec City, Levis, and further afield for an evening of poetry at the Morrin Centre. The soirée will celebrate and showcase poetry by members of the poetry group The Strong Threads as well as some participants from the Society Pages Poetry Contest.

The evening will also feature the inauguration of the poetry display case in the Library. Each month the case will display a different poem written by a Strong Threads member or Society Pages Poetry Contest winner or finalist.

Unable to make it in person? This activity will be offered in a hybrid form so you can join from the comfort of your own home too!

Northern Perimeter Out and About: Museum of civilizations, the Age of Pharaohs

Voice of English-speaking Quebec invites people over 50 living in the Northern perimeter of the City to hop on the bus as we go out and about. This week, visit the new exposition on pharaohs at the museum of civilization.

Free transportation is provided from Shannon and Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier

Pick up: 438 boul Jacques Cartier: 9:30 a.m.

Pick up 2215 boul Valcartier: 9:40 a.m.

We will eat lunch on site ( brown bag it or buy your lunch there) and leave at 1:15 p.m.

A minimum of 5 participants are required for the outing to occur, invite a friend!

Out and About: Museum of civilizations, the Age of Pharaohs

Out & About offers English speakers (50+) free transportation to various community activities while providing the opportunity to get out, socialize, and bond with others. Weekly outings include shopping trips, nature visits, excursions to l’Île d’Orléans, visits to museums, ice cream, and more! This week join us at the Museum of civilizations and discover their special Age of the Pharaoh’s exhibit. Cost of entry is free, but you may purchase or bring a lunch to enjoy in the museum’s cafe.

U.S States and National Parks: Lifelong Learning

Take a trip with fellow Lifelong Learning member, Mamie,  to hear about her visits to 10 western states and their national parks in 2021. Our facilitator, Mamie, will show us photos and inform us about these incredible places of North America.
