Virtual Baby Chat Café: Understanding the Québec Daycare System

  1. Baby Chat Café  has always offered a special oasis that allows parents of babies up to one year of age the chance to get together and  chat about a variety of parenting issues. During this pandemic period we will be meeting online instead of in person. Join us via teleconferencing on your smart phone, tablet, laptop or computer. Exchange information and make some new friends. Parents-to-be are also welcome to attend. We no longer have to worry about the shortage of parking space!   Come as you are and chill with us.  Learn more about the Québec Daycare System at the June 16th  session. Amanda Heath and Dana Hey will be giving us some insights from the perspective of a mom / daycare provider.

CHEP Videoconference: Coping with Arthritis During Social Isolation

One in five Canadians lives with Arthritis, according to the Arthritis Society. Arthritis can cause pain, decrease mobility, and diminish the quality of life. Join us via videoconference or telephone line  to learn about what you can do to manage your symptoms better and improve your functioning during these times of social isolation when our regular routines have gone by the wayside. Community Outreach to Seniors and their Caregivers: Tools for Planning Ahead (Online)

Planning ahead – no matter your age – makes things easier for people who might have to manage your affairs. Decide what is important for the future for you and those around you. Make sure your documents reflect your wishes and tell your loved ones. Learn about the legal tools that are available for all Quebecers such as  powers of attorney, protection mandates, wills and advance medical directives.

Join us as Richard Goldman, Laywer with Éducaloi explains what options are available, and how you can access them. There will be time for participants to ask questions. Jennifer Hobbs-Robert, Senior Advisor with JH Partners (retired Director of Nursing & Quality with Jeffery Hale – Saint Brigid’s and Accreditation Canada Surveyor) will also be present to respond to questions of a medical nature regarding these planning tools.

Pre-registration is necessary so we can send you the log-in details prior to the session. All you need to take part is internet access and a smart phone, tablet, laptop or computer with webcam. If you require technical assistance to help you feel more comfortable with this format, just ask and we will be happy to assist you.

Jeffery Hale Community Partners regularly offers caregivers an opportunity to take part in free art therapy sessions.  Participants will work in a small group with certified art therapist, Sophie Lesard-Latendresse. No artistic talent is needed. These session are intended to help you explore your feelings while enjoying the life affirming pleasures of creating art. Treat yourself to some ME  time!

EQIC Summer Solstice Spa Nite (Online)

EPIQ Volunteer, Dana invites you to  celebrate the summer solstice with a cleansing spa night. Now more than ever is a great time to cleanse ourselves inside and out while welcoming this wonderful time of year. So put on your comfy summer jammies, grab a glass of whatever quenches your thirst, and join  in on  an interactive vitual spa night.

Dana will be giving a hair mask tutorial with the ingredients listed below. We may also do facials and a tutorial on “dry brushing”. Many of the ingredients for the mask and facial you probably already have in the house, and if not can pick up cheaply and easily at  your local  pharmacy or grocery store.

Registration by noon on the Friday prior is  necessary since our get together will be done via teleconferencing and we need to send you the login details.

Hair Mask Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Pink Himalayen salt (or any salt that is not fine. Himalayen sea salt works too!)
  • Tea tree, lavender, peppermint or rosemary essential oil
  • You will need a bowl and a towel

Face Mask Ingredients:

If you already have a mask –  use that!   If not then you’ll need:

  • Honey
  • Oats (preferably big oats)

If you have micellar  water, toner, and moisturizer, please have close at hand as well. If you do not have a dry bush ,that’s ok!  Dana will explain the proper way to use one. Any questions – feel free to contact her.

Online Breastfeeding Get Together

Instead of our usual Café au Lait Crew group sessions, the Wellness Centre is offering online breastfeeding support on Tuesday, June 30 starting at 10:00 AM.   You can benefit from parent-to-parent contact, encouragement, valuable information and the expertise of Kate Nadeau, certified Breastfeeding Consultant with Allaitement Québec.  Partners are welcome too!

2020 Virtual Bishop’s Forum

We are pleased to let you know that the Bishop’s Forum is going virtual!

We will be welcoming young English-speaking Quebecers aged 17-26 who:

  • Identify as members of the English-speaking community
  • Want to deepen their understanding of how Quebec society works
  • Are passionate about working with their peers to bring about positive change

 WHEN: Saturday, August 8th through Tuesday, August 11th, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

 WHAT: Themes we have discussed at past Forums have included engaged citizenship, indigenous rights, social sustainability, mental health and health care, education, linguistic rights and much more. The Forum’s discussions are driven by participants’ interests and passions.

 WHERE & HOW: Participants will join our virtual Bishop’s Forum community for an online experience connecting with engaged youth from across the province (sessions will be hosted via web-based teleconferencing).

What will participants gain from the Bishop’s Forum?

  • Connect with fellow young Quebecers who will positively challenge them
  • Expand their network and engage with inspiring guest speakers
  • Become empowered to lead change in their own community

We’re also hosting an Instagram live event at @bishopsforum for interested young people on Tuesday, June 30th at 5:00 pm. Yolande James and past participants will be on hand to answer questions.

The Bishop’s Forum is funded by the Government of Quebec as part of its Stratégie d’action jeunesses 2016-2021. There is no cost to participate.

Are you new to Quebec City and looking for something fun to do? The Voice of English-speaking Quebec invites you for a fun-filled evening at the Newcomers Free Sunset Ferry Ride on Friday, August 28th from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. ***Note that the event date was changed because of the possibility of rain on Saturday, August 29th.***

We will ride the ferry to Quai Paquet in Lévis that leaves at 6:00 PM. Once there, we can grab some food or some ice-cream (or both!) from the food trucks available on the day, while getting to know each other! We will be returning on the 8:00 PM ferry (to Quebec).

The fees for the ferry ride are covered for participants and the event is open to all English-speaking newcomers living in the Greater Quebec City region. Registration is required and we have a limited number of places.  Please RSVP by calling 418-683-2366, extension 225. Or email newcomers@veq.ca

The Ferris Wheel ride and any other purchases (like meals) are not covered.

Art Therapy Sessions: Loss, Grief and Transformation

The Wellness Centre is offering a series of four art therapy sessions this fall for caregivers who have lost a loved one. Art therapist, Sophie Lessard-Latendresse will guide participants as they process and release emotions related to their individual losses while encouraging them to make sense of their feelings. These art therapy sessions will provide a safe place to honor and remember lost loved ones. It can help guide grieving caregivers towards transformation as they allow themselves time to process the significance of this journey.

Please understand that you do not need to have any artistic skills to participate in these sessions and this is not an art class. The actual art making process is more important than the art produced. These sessions provide an opportunity to express emotions on a page, canvas or in a clay sculpture. Participants find relief within the art making experience. All the necessary materials will be provided and safely delivered to your door free-of-charge.

Sessions will be offered virtually.  You can access them on your phone, tablet, ipad, latop or computer with webcam. If you need technical assistance, we are here to support you. Group confidentiality is a vital aspect of this process and all participants will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement upon registration.

Art Therapy Sessions: Loss, Grief and Transformation

The Wellness Centre is offering a series of four art therapy sessions this fall for caregivers who have lost a loved one. Art therapist, Sophie Lessard-Latendresse will guide participants as they process and release emotions related to their individual losses while encouraging them to make sense of their feelings. These art therapy sessions will provide a safe place to honor and remember lost loved ones. It can help guide grieving caregivers towards transformation as they allow themselves time to process the significance of this journey.

Please understand that you do not need to have any artistic skills to participate in these sessions and this is not an art class. The actual art making process is more important than the art produced. These sessions provide an opportunity to express emotions on a page, canvas or in a clay sculpture. Participants find relief within the art making experience. All the necessary materials will be provided and safely delivered to your door free-of-charge.

Sessions will be offered virtually.  You can access them on your phone, tablet, ipad, latop or computer with webcam. If you need technical assistance, we are here to support you. Group confidentiality is a vital aspect of this process and all participants will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement upon registration.

Get ready for birth in these unusual times by taking part in a three-session virtual prenatal course guided by Doula, Camille Nadeau. Learn all about Camille in a recent article about her in the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph newspaper.

The aim of these sessions is to give you tips for an active and calm childbirth, and help prepare you for the unexpected. We hope empower you on how to make an informed choice in terms of medical decisions and how to stay calm and resilient, no matter what.

  • Where: Online videoconference sessions. All you need is a cellphone, tablet or laptop with a camera and an internet connection.
  • When:  Tuesdays, October  6, 13, 20 &  27, 2020 at 6:30 pm

Straight Talk about End of Life Options: Community Outreach for Seniors and their Caregivers

If you are approaching the end of life, or you care for someone who is, there are a number of options for care under Canada and Quebec’s current laws. Join us as our special guest speaker, Jennifer Hobbs Robert, Senior Advisor with JH Partners (retired Director of Nursing & Quality with Jeffery Hale – Saint Brigid’s) and Accreditation Canada Surveyor explains the various  options. Find out how you can ensure that treatment is consistent with your final requests, or those of your loved one.

Gain a better understanding of what is meant by the terms palliative care, do not resuscitate orders; refusal or withdrawal of treatment; refusal of food and drink; palliative sedation to ensure comfort, medical assistance in dying and advanced medical directives.

This  event is being offered twice on October 7th – morning and evening. Please let us know which session you plan on attending. Enhancing Motor Skills for Elementary School Success

In recent  years kindergarten  teachers have noted children’s fine motor skills  may not be ready to hold a pencil, use scissors, tie shoes laces, undo buttons or engage in other daily fine motor activities. These skills are easily cultivated at home through games and simple daily tasks. Join us for an interesting informal  discussion with occupational therapist Pascale Lemaire. Learn more about the importance of fine motor skill development and the role it plays in school readiness in this free, online parent know-how session.

Join the Café au lait Crew on  Mondays from the comfort of your home via videoconference.  This is a relaxing, embracing space where you can benefit from parent-to-parent contact, encouragement, valuable information and  support from Shelley Dupuis, certified Breastfeeding Consultant with Allaitement Québec.  Everyone is welcome – including expectant moms. If you want to enjoy good company, please join us online! You don’t have be breastfeeding to participate. Older sibs are welcome as well.

Sessions take place once a month on Mondays from 10 to 11:00am.

Travellin’ Toddler Time: Halloween
