In this bilingual event, Jean Provencher will talk about the history of English-French relations in Quebec City, while Louisa Blair will examine a tale of murder in the Saguenay involving her distant relatives.
Provencher reflects on the ways in which the daily collaboration between Quebec City’s English-speaking and French-speaking populations has enriched the life of the city. Topics include culture, architecture, and health, as well as the role of significant personalities such as Joseph Morrin, James Douglas and James M. LeMoine.
A historian and writer for nearly 40 years, Provencher has authored or co-authored over 30 works, including the recently published fourth edition of the Chronologie de Québec. He won the 2011 Gérard Morriset award from the Government of Quebec, which recognizes careers dedicated to culture and heritage, and hosts the interactive web site JeanProvencher.com.
Murder in the Saguenay
In the early nineteenth century in the Saguenay, if a man got killed, the closest courtroom was in Quebec City. If the man was your brother and nobody saw, you kept it all in the family. Blair will talk about anglophone families in the Saguenay, including her own, based on resources in Brendan O’Donnell’s bibliography, her own interviews, family lore, fiction and sheer gossip.
Louisa Blair is a writer and editor and describes herself as a maudite anglophone québécoise de souche. Author of The Anglos: The Hidden Face of Quebec City 1608-1850, she lives in Quebec City where she was born.
Organized by QUESCREN, the ETRC, and the Morrin Centre.

Silence is deposited in thin layers at the Monastery of the Augustines for more than 375 years. It is a perfect place to experience an experience of collective silence.
After a short perspective inspired by the practices of the Augustines, we orchestrate together silence. Everyone is invited to dedicate his or her silence whether it is simply relaxing, meditative or spiritual, to a person, situation or cause.
A concert of silence is not so much to be silent as to listen. A way to regain calm, regenerate, rest, slow down, take a distance from outside stimuli, to get along from inside.
Silence is good for health! Several researchers, including the Italian cardiologist Luciano Bernardi, report that silence is a vector of health. It fulfills physical, psychological, emotional, sensory but also spatial functions by allowing us to revisit our place in the world.
“Silence for me is full. A person at the first concert of March 2017 dedicated silence

How to help the person you are caring for?
Understanding their needs versus yours
When you are caring for someone, your life can change in many ways. Some of these changes can be positive, but sometimes they might be challenging. Sometimes relationships can be strengthened, but the demands of caring mean that relationships can also become strained. Finding the right balance between your needs and the care receiver’s needs isn’t so easy. To continue this discussion and learn more, please plan to join us on Thursday, February 8 for a workshop led by Certified Executive and Life Coach Helen Walling as we acknowledge and better understand our needs versus the needs of those we care.
January’s Caregivers’ Café will be held in the community art room on the second floor of the Jeffery Hale pavilion from 10 am to noon. We offer free parking for this activity. For more information or to register, please contact Melisa Tas, intern in Social Work: 418 684-5333 ext 1539 or by email mtas@jhpartners.net
If you are reluctant to attend because you cannot leave your loved one alone, please call us so we can find a way to assist you.

Monday February 12 at 7:30 p.m. – Irish Heritage Quebec will hold an activity in McMahon Hall, 1145 De Salaberry in Quebec City. Marie-Claude Belley will give a presentation entitled “Compassion and necessity: the support of the Irish orphans of 1847-1848.” The adoption of Irish orphans by the population of Quebec in 1847 and 1848 is relatively well known. These adoptions have often been told from heroic and romantic perspectives typical of immigration history. With the help of facts and numbers, Marie-Claude Belley will nuance the story and highlight an unknown part of the history, the integration of adopted children into host families.
In 2003, Marie-Claude Belley submitted a master’s thesis at Université Laval on the support of the Irish Orphans from the 1847-1848 emigration years. She has worked for the past 17 years for Parks Canada and is now an advisor specialized in cultural resources management.
Refreshments will be served and parking stubs for Îlot St-Patrick will be validated. For further information phone Irish Heritage Quebec at 418-704-3404.
