WESTMINSTER CONCERTS – KLEINHAPL & WOYKE
Oct 29 @ 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is proud to present its most recent musical and cultural endeavor called Westminster Concerts. Inspired, once again, by London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields Embassy & Cultural Institutes Series,  the Cathedral will offer concerts organized in partnership with diplomatic missions located in Quebec City and Ottawa. The Westminster Concerts will not be an actual series, but rather timely events that will be announced in due time. Admission will be free, but the Cathedral will collect voluntary contributions at the end of the concerts.

The inaugural concert honours will go to the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa and will feature the Austrian-German duo Kleinhapl & Woyke at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on October 29, 2017 at 4:00 pm.

Why call them Westminster Concerts?

The main reason behind the name refers to the 1931 Act designed to give effect to resolutions adopted at the 1926 and 1930 Imperial Conferences, more commonly known as the Statute of Westminster. This law allowed Canada’s sovereignty to be recognized, thereby conferring it all powers in the conduct of its international relations. It was in response to this law that nations and states were able to formally establish embassies and other foreign missions in Canada. The title is also a nod to the City of Westminster, where the most widely known Anglican site, Westminster Abbey, is located. The church of St Martin-in-the-Fields is also located in this historic district, and furthermore, is Buckingham Palace’s official parish.

Kleinhapl & Woyke

The Kleinhapl & Woyke Duo is composed of Austrian cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl and German pianist Andreas Woyke, which have, since 2003, performed as a duo all over the world and released a number of CD-recordings. For their recording of the sonatas by Dimitri Shostakovich, they were rewarded with the Pasticcio-Preis of the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Cooperation). Their most recent recording of the first three Beethoven sonatas has been honored with the Excellentia Award, as well as with a number of fantastic press reviews.

Friedrich Kleinhapl, an Austrian cellist with Belgian roots, completed his studies under Philippe Muller in Paris, and has collaborated intensively with Claudio Abbado, Yehudi Menuhin, Tibor Varga and Paul Tortelier. Friedrich Kleinhapl has performed in London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Bonn, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Bologna, Warsaw, Zagreb as well as in the USA, Canada and Mexico. In 1998, he won a selective competition under a jury composed of members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The German pianist Andreas Woyke studied at the Cologne Conservatory and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He has won countless awards, including first prize at the Competition for Twentieth Century Music in Vienna. Andreas Woyke has performed all over the world: at the Musikverein and at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, at Radiohuset in Stockholm, at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory in Moscow, at the Kennedy Center in Washington and at the South Africa State Theatre in Pretoria.

About the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

Consecrated in August 1804, Holy Trinity is the first Anglican cathedral built outside the British Isles. In 1989, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recognized the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity as a place of national historic significance for its historical and architectural values. In the same year, it was also listed as a patrimonial building by the Government of Quebec. Modeled after London’s Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields at Trafalgar Square, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity also gets its inspiration from this church which has forged a strong musical identity over several decades and is now considered one of the most important places for classical music in London. Having initiated a decidedly musical shift at the beginning of 2015, the Cathedral’s ambition is now to become nothing less than the St Martin-in-the-Fields of Quebec City!

Literary Feast
Nov 2 @ 1:30 PM – 6:00 PM

HRISTIANE GERMAIN AND LOUISE PENNY COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THE MORRIN CENTRE’S ANNUAL LITERARY FEAST

Quebec City – With Louise Penny and Christiane Germain bringing their support to the Morrin Centre’s ninth annual fundraising dinner, this year’s Literary Feast will undoubtedly be a warm and convivial event. Hundreds of thousands of readers have curled up with Penny’s mystery novels, while thousands more have stayed in Germain’s luxurious hotels. Attendees can meet both nationally-acclaimed businesswomen at this event to be held Thursday, November 2, 2017.  The evening will start with a cocktail at 5:30 p.m. in one of Canada’s most beautiful libraries, followed by dinner in historic College Hall at 6:30 p.m

Louise Penny, renowned international author, will be keynote speaker for the evening. Penny received many literary honours including a New Blood Dagger for Best First Novel; two Arthur Ellis awards; three Anthony awards; and an unprecedented four consecutive Agatha awards for best novel, in addition to a nomination for a fifth. Her books have made the New York Times Bestseller Lists repeatedly, and her Gamache novels have been published in 23 languages. One of her Inspector Gamache novels, Bury Your Dead, uses the Morrin Centre’s Victorian library as backdrop for a terrible murder. She will be talking about her new book, Glass Houses, on this occasion.

The evening’s Honorary President, Christiane Germain, is co-president of Groupe Germain Hotels, as well as the soul behind the experiential concept at Germain establishments. She is also in charge of operations for all hotels under the Le Germain Hotels banner and the Alt Hotel banner. Dynamic, tenacious and inventive, Christiane has made her mark in the restaurant and hotel industries. She is also a “dragon” on the show Dans l’oeil du dragon on Radio-Canada, the Quebec adaptation of Dragons Den.

A silent auction will also take place during the evening, with proceeds enabling the Morrin Centre to continue offering a variety of stimulating and innovative English-language cultural programs at a reasonable cost.

A limited number of tickets for this black-tie (optional) event are available for $250 per person. A private VIP Bury Your Dead tour of the Morrin Centre with Louise Penny can also be purchased with your ticket for $100. We strongly advise purchasing your tickets in advance since a limited number are available for the evening and tour. Tickets may be reserved by calling our Administrative Assistant, Rosemarie Fischer, at 418-694-9147, extension 221, or by e-mailing info@morrin.org.

Off the Shelf with Jean Provencher and Louisa Blair
Nov 8 @ 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

In this bilingual event, Jean Provencher will talk about the history of English-French relations in Quebec City, while Louisa Blair will examine a tale of murder in the Saguenay involving her distant relatives.

Provencher reflects on the ways in which the daily collaboration between Quebec City’s English-speaking and French-speaking populations has enriched the life of the city. Topics include culture, architecture, and health, as well as the role of significant personalities such as Joseph MorrinJames Douglas and James M. LeMoine.

A historian and writer for nearly 40 years, Provencher has authored or co-authored over 30 works, including the recently published fourth edition of the Chronologie de Québec. He won the 2011 Gérard Morriset award from the Government of Quebec, which recognizes careers dedicated to culture and heritage, and hosts the interactive web site JeanProvencher.com.

Murder in the Saguenay

In the early nineteenth century in the Saguenay, if a man got killed, the closest courtroom was in Quebec City. If the man was your brother and nobody saw, you kept it all in the family. Blair will talk about anglophone families in the Saguenay, including her own, based on resources in Brendan O’Donnell’s bibliography, her own interviews, family lore, fiction and sheer gossip.

Louisa Blair is a writer and editor and describes herself as a maudite anglophone québécoise de souche. Author of The Anglos: The Hidden Face of Quebec City 1608-1850, she lives in Quebec City where she was born.

Organized by QUESCREN, the ETRC, and the Morrin Centre.

Concert of Dedicated Silence
Dec 13 @ 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Silence is deposited in thin layers at the Monastery of the Augustines for more than 375 years. It is a perfect place to experience an experience of collective silence.

After a short perspective inspired by the practices of the Augustines, we orchestrate together silence. Everyone is invited to dedicate his or her silence whether it is simply relaxing, meditative or spiritual, to a person, situation or cause.

A concert of silence is not so much to be silent as to listen. A way to regain calm, regenerate, rest, slow down, take a distance from outside stimuli, to get along from inside.

Silence is good for health! Several researchers, including the Italian cardiologist Luciano Bernardi, report that silence is a vector of health. It fulfills physical, psychological, emotional, sensory but also spatial functions by allowing us to revisit our place in the world.

“Silence for me is full. A person at the first concert of March 2017 dedicated silence
