SUMMARY:Creative Community: From Poetry to Song
DESCRIPTION:Creative Community:\nFrom Poetry to Song\n\n\n\n\nSpend a cozy afternoon immersed in bilingual poetry and song\, with live performances by Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson. \n\n\n\n\nIn addition to the performances by singer-songwriters Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson\, this gathering is both an open mic and open stage session. You can join a sing-along\, play your instrument\, read poetry\, or simply listen. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n— Performance and sing-along: Roger Bontemps Dubé\, singer-songwriter \n— Open mic\, open stage\, discussion: Luc Murray Mercier\, moderator \n— Performance: Owen Ferguson\, singer-songwriter \nThis activity is bilingual. English and French will be used in an alternating fashion.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuests \n \n  \nHaving worked in the field of interactive entertainment and teaching as a graphic designer\, Roger Bontemps Dubé‘s career took a turn in 2003. It was then that he published his first children’s book\, Presto et Balthazar\, with great success. As if by magic\, he subsequently transformed into a modern-day troubadour. Since then\, he has performed brilliantly in different contexts: libraries\, schools\, festivals\, and book fairs. \n  \n  \n \nOwen Ferguson is a PhD student and solo musician from Ontario. As a member of the Strong Threads poetry group\, he began weaving spoken word into his songs as a way to showcase poetry alongside music. His latest album\, On Loss (2025)\, explores the grieving process through full-band arrangements and stripped-back acoustic guitar layered with poetry. Outside of music\, Owen is a mediocre hockey goalie and is finishing his PhD on Parkinson’s disease. At this show\, expect a mix of singing\, guitar\, poetry\, and open conversation. \n  \nLuc Murray Mercier is a library assistant at the Morrin Centre\, a graduate student in English literature at Université Laval\, and an artist whose practice ranges from performance to painting by way of sound and installation art\, dance\, and writing. \n  \nThis activity is part of the Creative Community—Making Art Together project\, made possible thanks to the support of the Government of Canada. \nHave a look at the full programming here!

SUMMARY:Creative Community: The Hat Trick
DESCRIPTION:Creative Community:\nThe Hat Trick\n\n\n\n\nLearn about circus creation through hat juggling with Yohann Trépanier! \n\n\n\n\n \nDuring this introductory workshop\, we explore the hat as an object of play and movement. Through juggling\, manipulation\, clowning\, and dancing\, we experience skill\, clumsiness\, and the pleasure of gesture. The hat becomes a playing partner\, a pretext for improvisation\, and a support for expression\, in a fun\, accessible\, and progressive approach. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n– Presentation\, in French\, about contemporary circus and hat juggling \n– Bilingual Q&A \n– Hat juggling workshop (English and French used in an alternating fashion) \nThis workshop is open to all (16 years old and older); no previous experience is required. You will be provided with hats. Please bring comfortable indoor shoes.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuest \nA circus artist since 2004\, Yohann Trépanier has developed an artistic universe that is both comic and poetic\, and where the relationship between the body and the object is at the heart of his creativity. He constantly explores new aspects of circus arts and shares his work with diverse audiences from around the world. \nA graduate from the École de cirque de Québec (2007) and the National Circus School in Montreal (2012)\, Yohann stands out for his creativity and proactivity. He made a name for himself with the duo Les Beaux Frères and the essential comic number La Serviette (Napkin). He also co-founded Machine de Cirque\, a company with an international reputation where he was involved as a performer and creator of its several major productions. At the same time\, he nurtured a research and development practice\, through which the oscillating mast for circus acts emerged\, among other things. \nCredit: Marie-Ève Kingsley \nAlways questioning his art and his practice\, Yohann gives depth and singularity to his projects\, whether they are about interpretation\, creation or training. His approach values sharing and exchange\, inviting an artistic experience that is both personal and collective\, and demonstrates an innovative approach to circus arts. \n\n  \nThis activity is part of the Creative Community—Making Art Together project\, made possible thanks to the support of the Government of Canada.

SUMMARY:In the Ballroom: Children's Dances and their Origins
DESCRIPTION:In the Ballroom:\nChildren’s Dances and their Origins\n\n\n\n\nDive into the lively practice of traditional québécois dances! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for five exciting events celebrating québécois dance and music traditions\, some of which are rooted in English-speaking communities that have long helped shape our province’s cultural landscape. If you are curious\, love living heritage activities\, or simply want to move and have fun\, come experience the energy of traditional dances and the stories behind them with our Ès TRAD guests! \n  \nOn March 8\, young and old are invited to discover traditional dances and their origins to wrap up spring break with a bang with Hélène Fournier (call)\, Miriam Blair (violin)\, and Maxence Croteau (guitar). \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n-Dance workshop for all ages\n-Live music throughout! \n  \nThis activity is offered bilingually\, in both French and English. \nPlease bring comfortable shoes with with good support and non-adherent soles\, as well as a water bottle.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuests \n \nSinger\, caller\, artisan\, and cultural animator with no equal\, Hélène Fournier is without a doubt an accomplished bearer of heritage\, as highlighted by the prize she received from Ville de Québec in 2019. With education in Popular art and traditions (Ethnology) and in Education sciences from Université Laval\, she specializes in connecting with a young public through her experiences at the Centre d’initiation au patrimoine–La Grande Ferme de  Saint-Joachim\, as well as through her punctual projects\, notably the CD-book Le bal des animaux\, Dansons sous les flocons and her call classes. \nTo learn more about Hélène Fournier\, listen to the Ès TRAD podcast “Porter la tradition.” \n— \n  \n \n  \n  \nMiriam Blair is a passionate artist. She loves playing the violin and put her talents to use for the benefit of Québécois traditional music. She has a wide enough repertoire to waltz easily between Celtic and Québécois styles (both ancient and modern). \n  \n— \n  \n  \n\n\n\n  \n  \n \nCredit: Carbo Photo \nMaxence Croteau was exposed to traditional music from a very young age\, as he accompanied his parents to festivals such as Mémoires et Racines and Chants de Vielles\, participated in evenings at the Domaine Maizerets and the Poulailler d’Inverness\, and attended shows at the Maison Chevalier or the honey farm in St-Agapit\, his birth village. As a teen\, he started learning to play the guitar\, his main instrument\, but it took many years before trying his hand at accompanying reels\, jigs\, and waltz. It’s in 2014\, at the Souches à Oreilles camp\, that he was initiated into this art by Paul Marchand and met\, at the same time\, the “great trad family.” The following yeas were marked by jam sessions\, shows\, dances\, and many other gatherings. Maxence mainly plays the guitar\, but also some violin\, concertina\, banjo\, piano\, and harmonica. Today\, he works as a contract musician\, hosts trad shows on CKRL 89\,1\, and dedicates himself to various initiatives aiming to preserve trad culture and support those that make it live. \n  \n\nIn the Ballroom—Traditional Music and Dance of a Community is presented in collaboration with the Centre de valorisation du patrimoine vivant Ès TRAD and made possible thanks to financial support from the Gouvernement du Québec and Ville de Québec through their cultural development agreement. \nCheck out the full programming here!

SUMMARY:In the Ballroom: Scottish and Irish Dances at Home
DESCRIPTION:In the Ballroom:\nScottish and Irish Dances at Home\n\n\n\n\nDive into the lively practice of traditional québécois dances! \n  \nOn February 25\, discover the québécois twist to Scottish and Irish dances that have found a home in our province with James Allan (call)\, François Dumas (violin)\, and Susie Lemay (piano) \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n-Short concert\n-Short historical introduction to Scottish and Irish dances in Quebec\n-Dance workshop \n  \nThis activity is offered bilingually\, in both French and English. \nPlease bring comfortable shoes with with good support and non-adherent soles\, as well as a water bottle.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuests \n \n\nCredit: Carbo Photo \n\n  \n  \nOf Scottish and Irish origin\, James Allan was born in Kinnear’s Mills and is part of a dance and calling heritage. Originally a dancer\, James started calling in 1988. He is the sole member of the new generation to call in English\, respecting this tradition of over 60 years in the Inverness townships\, which stretch along the North-East limit of the Les Bois-Francs region\, between Beauce and the Eastern Townships\, on the South shore of the St-Lawrence River. As always\, James will give his explanations in French\, present the vocabulary of the workshop\, and call in English. \n— \n  \nBorn in Saint-Charles de Bellechasse\, François Dumas discovered the violing at 4 years old. Very young\, he developed a passion for the music of his idol Jean Carignan\, whose style he will study methodically. Today\, François is admired and known everywhere as a violonist with exceptional talent. Thanks to his breathtaking bow manipulation\, François Dumas has become a worthy bearer of Jean Carignan’s repertoire and technique. François has participated in many shows and recordings. His love of québécois folklore has carried him a little bit everywhere on Quebec stages\, in a few European countries\, and in Mexico. \n— \n \nSusie Lemay started playing the accordion through her family’s influence. In 1987\, she started exploring traditional music from Quebec\, Ireland\, Scotland\, and musette on the melodeon and the three-row accordion with musical masters such as Denis Pépin and Philippe Bruneau. In 2005\, Susie purchased a two-row\, ré/do# accordion. She has since dedicated her efforts to that instrument\, and her music presents tonalities faithful to the original melodies and the opportunity to expend her repertoire through the adaptation of violin parts to the accordion. In recent years\, she is also present in the field on the piano. In 2016\, she founded the group “TIPSY 3” with two other musicians from the Maritimes\, promoting traditional music from Eastern Canada. Many traditional music event organizers call on her to showcase her mastery of her instrument and her knowledge of the repertoire. She has performed in Quebec\, in Canada\, in the United States\, and in Europe. She shares the best of the musical treasures in a universe where tradition doesn’t have borders. In 2014\, along with Denis Pépin\, she was granted the “coup de coeur” Heritage Prize from the Ville de Lévis for their album DEUX\, which came out in 2022.

SUMMARY:Express Yourself: Writing the Messy First Draft
DESCRIPTION:Express Yourself:\nWriting the Messy First Draft\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the creative workshop Writing the Messy First Draft: A Somatic Approach to Creative Writing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes perfectionism stop you before you’ve written a single word? Does your inner critic hijack the creative process? This workshop teaches you how to bypass the editor and access authentic voice through your body. \nUsing breathwork\, bilateral movement\, and embodied writing exercises\, you’ll learn to quiet mental chatter and write from a grounded\, present state. We’ll explore the neuroscience behind creative flow and practice somatic techniques that shift you out of “editor brain” and into generative mode. \n  \n\n\n\nParticipants will:  \n– Understand how nervous system regulation supports creative expression \n– Practice body-based techniques for accessing creative flow \n– Generate 3-5 pieces of raw written material using sensory prompts \n– Learn to write from body memory rather than mental narrative \n– Take home a resource guide with somatic writing practices to continue using them independently \n  \nAll materials will be provided. This workshop is open to writers of any level\, with no previous somatic experience required.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nWorks created during the workshop may be submitted for the Morrin Centre’s call for zine publications. \nCome ready to move\, breathe\, and get some words on the page! \n\nCheck out the Morrin Centre Website Here: https://www.morrin.org/en/event/express-yourself-writing-the-messy-first-draft/?mc_cid=66a2230d63&mc_eid=783d4e7481 \n\n  \nWorkshop Facilitator \nAmanda Jeanne is a writer and visual artist based in Lac-Beauport who integrates somatic practices into both her art-making and teaching. She publishes “Squirrel Brain\, Chickadee Soul” on Substack\, exploring creative practice\, neurodivergence\, and immigrant experience in Quebec. Amanda facilitates intuitive painting workshops and creative retreats with an embodied approach and is currently completing a memoir. Her training includes AMI Quebec’s “Write from the Heart” workshop series\, therapeutic arts facilitation\, and Somatic Activated Healing (SAH) method practice. You can find her work online on her website and on Substack. \n  \n\n  \n   The project Express Yourself—From Thought to Zine is made possible thanks to the support of the Government of Canada.
