DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author: Margarita Saona\n\n\n\n\nCome meet Margarita Saona at the Morrin Centre on Wednesday\, March 20\, 2024! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargarita Saona\, Peruvian author\, will read from her short-story collection The Ghost of You\, recently published in Canada by Laberinto Press\, which focuses on underrepresented ESL writing and World Literature in translation. In her review of the book for the Miramichi Reader\, Carrie Stanton wrote: “The Ghost of You is a collection about loss – loss of time\, of circumstances\, of wishes\, and of people\, some of whom we may not have ever met\, but we know intimately […] Margarita Saona is a masterful creator of story. Her use of language and form is unique\, as is her skill with the application of sparse wording\, which leads to a tremendous impact being felt by her reader.” \n  \nTHE AUTHOR \n \nPhoto Credit: Mariana Bazo \n\nMargarita Saona teaches Latin American literature in the department of Hispanic and Italian Studies. She is interested in issues of memory\, cognition\, empathy\, and representation in literature and the arts. Her scholarly publications include Novelas familiares: Figuraciones de la nación en la novela latinoamericana contemporánea (2004)\, Memory Matters in Transitional Perú (2014)\, and Despadre: masculinidades\, travestismos y ficciones de la ley en la literatura peruana (2021). Her short stories have been collected under the title La ciudad en que no estás (2020)\, published in English translation as The Ghost of You (2023). She has also published the poetry collection Corazón de hojalata/Tin Heart (2017)\, which received the Luces award for the best Peruvian poetry collection of the year. She is currently working on an essay on medical interventions entitled Of Monsters and Cyborgs and a multi-genre memoir on the experience of heart transplantation. She has been recognized twice by the Council of Excellence in Teaching and Learning and received the 2022 Amauta Tumi Award for outstanding teachers granted by the Peruvian community in the U.S. She has been a fellow of the UIC Institute for the Humanities on three occasions\, including this year for her project on illness and writing. She is also one of the fellows of The Patient Revolution\, an initiative by Dr. Victor Montori from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to seek ways to transform medical care systems. \n  \nThis event is free and does not require registration. \n  \nThis event is held in partnership with the Département de littérature\, théâtre et cinéma de la Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines from Université Laval.

It will be given by the Morrin Centre team\, in French\, following a recipe created specifically for the project by La Touche Héloïse. \n  \nPlease note:\n– The hands-on workshops cover the preparation of the dishes\, but the Nun’s farts will still need to be baked in the oven at home before eating.\n–Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and the adult must book tickets for both themselves and their child(ren).

He is President of the Jeffery Hale – Saint Brigid’s Advisory Committee. co-Chair of the “L’équipe de recherche en partenariat sur la diversité culturelle et l’immigration dans la région de Québec”\, and co-author of ‘The Holland Centre Experience – A Community Development Model for Minorities – I dream’. \nMichael Boden was born and raised in Quebec City. Michael graduated from Acadia University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He joined the Foundations’ Office in 2022 and is the Executive Director of The Jeffery Hale Foundation\, Citadel Foundation\, and St. Brigid’s Home Foundation. Michael\, in collaboration with the QAC\, wrote and produced a multi-media theatre presentation “The Philanthropist”\, the life story of Jeffery Hale. \n– and members from the Quebec Art Company \n  \nMichael Boden\, Richard Walling and a few special guests\, will present the historic journey of Jeffery Hale “The Philanthropist “and the evolution of the Jeffery Hale Hospital and partner organizations\, from the early 1800’s to today’s reality and beyond. Loch will be joined by Vanessa Bell and Sierra Duffey as well as other local poets for a reading. An open mic will follow: all are welcome! \nUnable to make it in person? In 2023\, he was mentored by ReLit Award-winning poet Simina Banu as part of the Quebec Writers’ Federation mentorship program. Loch’s writing has appeared in various magazines\, including pixie\, Maybe Magazine\, Society Pages\, yolk literary\, and Maclean’s. Loch’s debut poetry chapbook Citronellawas published by Anstruther Press on February 1\, 2024. When he is not writing\, Loch can be found teaching English\, reading a book\, or submerged in a body of water. Her vivid\, trenchant writing and commitment have earned her several grants and awards in Quebec and abroad. \n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n\n \nSierra Duffey is a queer writer and photographer in Montreal\, Quebec. Through sassy poetry and colourful photographs\, Sierra explores topics such as psychology\, relationships\, cults\, and nature. Sierra strives to create connection through art and writing\, which she views as a spiritual practice and a form of community-building. She is the author of Lemon Drop Lyrics a zesty chapbook with Montreal’s Cactus Press. SUMMARY:Ballooning to Safety - Mixed-Media Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Montreal artist Billy Mavreas in a mixed-media exploration inspired by prompts from English-language writing from Quebec\, combining words and images to create unique visual poetry that is both read and appreciated as visual art. \nYou can attend either or both sessions\, no previous experience required:\n– Register here for the workshop on Monday\, March 4\, at 7 p.m.\n– Register here for the workshop on Wednesday\, March 6\, at 7 p.m. \n  \nBilly Mavreas is a multidisciplinary artist and creativity workshop leader specializing in jumpstarting inspiration through collaborative creative play. The author of four graphic novels and director of gallery boutique Monastiraki (1998 – 2021)\, he has been involved in the Montreal arts community since the 1980s. \nBilly is also a gifted teacher who has done writing and art activities for Atwater Writers Exhibition with seniors\, kids\, and adults\, people with a range of past experience or none at all. His artwork often includes text. DESCRIPTION:Come discover the “first Canadian novel”! \n\n\n\n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFrances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague (1769) has been described as “the first Canadian novel.” Written in epistolary form\, the fascinating story depicts life in eighteenth-century Quebec City from the perspectives of British heroine Emily Montague and her friends. The novel sheds light on the relationship between French\, English\, and Indigenous cultures\, changing gender roles\, and the differences between North America and England. “Any way you read it…the novel is still able to instruct and delight.” (Borealis Press). \n  \n\nThe novel will be read and discussed in parts over three sessions: \n\n\n\nPart I:\nSaturday\, March 2 at 4:30 p.m.\n\n\nPart II:\nSaturday\, March 30 at 4:30 p.m.\n\n\nParts III & IV:\nSaturday\, April 27 at 4:30 p.m.\n\n\n\n  \nThis activity is in partnership with the English literature program in the Département de littérature\, théâtre et cinéma at Université Laval. DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy our historical talk series Building our Community\, where we will take a look at the past\, present and\, in some cases\, future of the English-language community institutions that have contributed to the development of Quebec city. From our past educational institutions to our modern medical institutions and so much more\, our community has a lot of history to share! Come one and all to meet our specialists and learn more about how our community evolved and came to be through its intitutions. \nOur Guest \nDavid Mendel\, who retired as President of Mendel Tours in 2019\, studied at York University in Toronto and at the University of Paris\, before moving to Quebec City in 1976. After completing a master’s thesis in Art History and undertaking doctoral studies at Laval University\, he became co-founder of Mendel Tours in 1984. He is often called upon to give talks about the history of Quebec at international conferences and has given numerous tours of the city for visiting dignitaries. \nA resident of Quebec’s historic district since 1976\, he is very involved in preservation issues. He is President of the Foundation of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity ─ the first Anglican Cathedral to have been built outside the British Isles. He is the author of a best-selling series of guidebooks devoted to Quebec City and its surrounding region: Quebec: World Heritage City (2009); Quebec\, Birthplace of New France (2012); The Seminary of Quebec\, A Living Heritage (2013); Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (2015); Le Château Frontenac\, in the Heart of Old Quebec (2018); and co-author\, with François Tremblay and Judy Bross\, of Charlevoix\, a Tradition of Hospitality (2018). \n \nVenez profiter d’une série de présentations historiques dans le cadre de notre projet Construire notre communauté. DESCRIPTION:Culinary Mosaic – Chop Suey Through the Ages \n\n\nThis cooking workshop will be given in French and will teach how to make chop suey. \nFrom scones to chicken fricassee\, the Culinary Mosaic series of workshops at the Morrin Centre offer a wonderful opportunity to prepare dishes and learn about the history of the English and French Canadian food traditions. A variety of dishes will be presented by and made under the guidance of chef\, writer\, stylist\, consultant\, and entrepreneur Héloïse Leclerc from La Touche Héloïse. She will also provide some historical background\, share fun facts about the dishes\, and give tips to adjust and create variations of the recipes for further enjoyment. \nRegister here! \n  \n  \n  \nPlease note:\n– The hands-on workshops cover the preparation of the dishes\, but they will still need to be cooked at home before eating.\n– During the general public workshops\, children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and the adult must book tickets for both themselves and their child(ren). \n  \nClick here for the full programming
