SUMMARY:Book Launch: What We Choose To Forget: A Quebec Story of Unshared Memories
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch: What We Choose To Forget: A Quebec Story of Unshared Memories\n  \nMeet Guy Rex Rodgers and discover his book What We Choose To Forget! \nRSVP at guyrexrodgers@gmail.com \n \nAbout the Book \nIn May 2022\, Guy Rex Rodgers released What We Choose To Remember\, a documentary film about waves of immigration in Quebec\, from the British Conquest to the arrival of university students in the 21st century. A month later\, the CAQ government passed Bill 96 to protect Quebec from too many English speakers\, immigrants\, and foreign students. For the next three years\, Rodgers toured What We Choose To Remember around Quebec\, and after each screening invited audience members to share their stories. The collective portrait that emerged explodes some of Quebec’s most persistent myths about who is Québécois. \nThe heartland of Nouvelle France was the Saint-Lawrence Valley\, but it was never pure Catholic or francophone. Scottish and Irish soldiers fought on both sides of the Plains of Abraham. \nMost of the first settlers in the Eastern Townships and the Ottawa Valley were English speakers. Then the 20th century saw an explosion of immigration that did not fit the French/English\, Catholic/ Protestant binary. The reality is far more interesting than Two Solitudes. \nThese ‘immigrants’—who come from many countries and speak a variety of languages—are proud to be Quebecers. What We Choose To Forget gives them a voice—and they have a lot to say about Quebec and their place in it! \n  \n \n  \nAbout the Author \nGuy Rex Rodgers is a filmmaker who has made eight documentaries about anglophones and allophones in Quebec\, and he writes a column in The Montrealer magazine about history\, culture\, and politics. Rodgers is also a community activist who founded ELAN (English Language Arts Network) and co-founded the Quebec Writers’ Federation and the Quebec Drama Federation. In 2015\, he was appointed a Compagnon of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec. \n  \nCredit: Pantea Pezeschkan

SUMMARY:EXTENDED TECHNIQUE: poetry as a site of intermedial experimentation
DESCRIPTION:Join invited poet Jay Ritchie and guests for EXTENDED TECHNIQUE\, an event exploring poetry as a site of intermedial experimentation. \n\n\n\n\nIn 1909\, Arnold Schoenberg composed Drei Klavierstücke Op. 11\, a set of pieces for solo piano with an unusual set of instructions: certain keys were to be silently depressed\, raising their dampers to allow the strings to vibrate sympathetically when others were struck. This extended the technique of the instrument\, applying unorthodox methods to generate new sounds\, timbres\, and possibilities. \nWhat would it look like to extend the technique of poetry? To intersect the poetic with repertoires of visual\, sonic\, and digital media in performance? What sympathetic resonances might emerge from these overlaps and interstices? \nJoin invited poet Jay Ritchie and guests for EXTENDED TECHNIQUE\, an event exploring poetry as a site of intermedial experimentation. \n  \nJay Ritchie \nJay Ritchie is a poet\, critic\, and teacher. He holds an MFA in Poetry from UMass Amherst and a PhD in English from McGill University. His most recent poetry collection\, Listening in Many Publics (Invisible Publishing\, 2024)\, was a finalist for the A. M. Klein Prize for Poetry\, and he teaches courses in literature and creative writing at various universities. Creative and critical work has appeared in Chicago Review\, Jacket2\, Maisonneuve\, SAND\, The Fiddlehead\, and elsewhere. \n  \nLet them know you’ll be coming by saving a seat in the form on Morrin Centre’s Website Here: https://www.morrin.org/en/event/extended-techniquepoetry-as-a-site-of-intermedial-experimentation/?mc_cid=1615aa411c&mc_eid=783d4e7481 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Creative Community: From Poetry to Song
DESCRIPTION:Creative Community:\nFrom Poetry to Song\n\n\n\n\nSpend a cozy afternoon immersed in bilingual poetry and song\, with live performances by Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson. \n\n\n\n\nIn addition to the performances by singer-songwriters Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson\, this gathering is both an open mic and open stage session. You can join a sing-along\, play your instrument\, read poetry\, or simply listen. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n— Performance and sing-along: Roger Bontemps Dubé\, singer-songwriter \n— Open mic\, open stage\, discussion: Luc Murray Mercier\, moderator \n— Performance: Owen Ferguson\, singer-songwriter \nThis activity is bilingual. English and French will be used in an alternating fashion.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuests \n \n  \nHaving worked in the field of interactive entertainment and teaching as a graphic designer\, Roger Bontemps Dubé‘s career took a turn in 2003. It was then that he published his first children’s book\, Presto et Balthazar\, with great success. As if by magic\, he subsequently transformed into a modern-day troubadour. Since then\, he has performed brilliantly in different contexts: libraries\, schools\, festivals\, and book fairs. \n  \n  \n \nOwen Ferguson is a PhD student and solo musician from Ontario. As a member of the Strong Threads poetry group\, he began weaving spoken word into his songs as a way to showcase poetry alongside music. His latest album\, On Loss (2025)\, explores the grieving process through full-band arrangements and stripped-back acoustic guitar layered with poetry. Outside of music\, Owen is a mediocre hockey goalie and is finishing his PhD on Parkinson’s disease. At this show\, expect a mix of singing\, guitar\, poetry\, and open conversation. \n  \nLuc Murray Mercier is a library assistant at the Morrin Centre\, a graduate student in English literature at Université Laval\, and an artist whose practice ranges from performance to painting by way of sound and installation art\, dance\, and writing. \n  \nThis activity is part of the Creative Community—Making Art Together project\, made possible thanks to the support of the Government of Canada. \nHave a look at the full programming here!
