Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. – Join the Fourth Avenue Trio for its first concert at the Morrin Centre, 44 Chaussée des Écossais in Old Quebec. The evening’s program will feature music by the great Polish composer for piano Frédéric Chopin and one of the foremost composers of woodwind duets, Friedrich Kuhlau. The heart of the recital, however, is anchored in the baroque period, of which the best-known composers are Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friderich Handel. One particularly emotional and haunting compositional form from that period is the “trio sonata” in which three instruments (two woodwinds and a harpsichord) pass a theme back and forth with variations in key, mood and emotion.
– Emma Ahern first discovered her passion for the oboe at age twelve when her teachers at Mont-Saint-Sacrement High School noticed her natural talent for the instrument. She is now studying the oboe at undergraduate level with Philippe Magnan at the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec, where she also plays regularly in the school orchestra and in two chamber music ensembles. Her studies have also led her to play in well-known orchestras such as the Orchestre symphonique de la Côte-Nord and Orchestre symphonique de Québec.
– Kasia Borkowska grew up in Poland where she started playing piano at age 6. On moving to Canada at age 15, she continued studying piano performance along with music history and literature. She has M.A. in ethnomusicology and graduate diploma in education. She lives in Quebec where she teaches English and piano.
– Peter Calkins discovered music at age seven as a soprano in his father’s church choir and has played the flute since he was eight. While a student at Harvard, he performed in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado. He then played first flute in the Cornell University orchestra. Since retirement from Laval University as a professor of Asian and African economic development, he has become active in the Quebec Art Company, performing in My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Cage aux folles, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He has also played flute for the As de choeur’s production of Into the Woods and the soundtrack for the indie film The Troubadour Child.

Get ready to celebrate St. Pat’s 175th anniversary in 2018
It’s time to celebrate! St. Patrick’s High School will be celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2018.
The first Irish Catholic school in Quebec City opened in 1843. The priests of the time could not have imagined the long-term impact or success this school would have! Yet, 175 years later it is going strong with about 550 students enrolled and a growing population. It’s now time to bring the alumni home to celebrate 175 years of history. May 18 to 20, 2018, will see over 1,500 student and staff alumni return to Quebec City to mark this historic event.
Activities will include:
Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. – Meet and Greet at the school. Participants will receive their official weekend package including the Saturday evening banquet ticket and the official reunion souvenir. There will be bar service as well as music at the school all evening.
Saturday, May 19, will start with an “open gym” for the young ones. Alumni are encouraged to bring their children to play basketball in the very same gym their parents played in. This will be followed by celebrating the different decades (1960s- 2000s) with pickup basketball games. The school will offer tours and visits to various displays of memorabilia.
The Saturday evening banquet will take place at the Centre des Congrès (Quebec City Convention Center) starting with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. As you enjoy a fabulous four-course meal (with a half-bottle of wine per person) you can experience a visual walk through history. Dancing will follow.
Sunday, May 20, 10 a.m. The weekend festivities close with Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, with dessert and coffee served in McMahon Hall after the service.
Many people have registered to receive information, but NOW is the time to take the next step: BUY TICKETS. All alumni (students and staff) are invited to return to the official website: www.stpats175.ca and click on the BUY TICKETS link.
The Early Bird price of $120 is available until November 30, 2017.
The regular price of $135 will go into effect on December 1, 2017.
From September until November 30, tickets may also be purchased at the school office for $120 (cash only).
A representative from the organizing committee will also be present to sell tickets ($120 cash only) at Mass at St. Patrick’s Church on September 10, 23, October 22 and November 12.
Numerous hotels have been reserved with special rates and are within walking distance of the festivities. The links for accommodations can also be found on the official website.

About Arts Alive! Québec
Six different regions, with performances and activities for the whole family from June through September. The six regions are Hudson, Huntingdon, Knowlton, Quebec City, Wakefield and the West Island/Montreal. Letters of ongoing support were instrumental in the series’ return. Some communities focus around a main venue and its environs, others transform the entire town. Programming is highly individual, reflecting local tastes, arts and cultures. There’s something different to experience and savour at each region’s event, from local artists and visiting headliners to children’s shows, dance, theatre, literary activities, storytelling, visual arts, loads of music and artisanal products. On offer are indoor and outdoor events for all ages, including hands-on creative activities led by professional musicians, theatre artists, dancers, filmmakers and craftspeople. Through the universal language of art, Arts Alive! Québec’s inclusive, family-friendly atmosphere builds bridges between English-speaking and French-speaking communities.
COMEDIHA! FEST–QUÉBEC MISSION
To organize an annual world hub, for the comedy and humour industry, that addresses the different communities composed of artists and audiences; with the goal of creating important cultural, touristic and economic benefits.
