DESCRIPTION:Creative Community:\nFrom Poetry to Song\n\n\n\n\nSpend a cozy afternoon immersed in bilingual poetry and song\, with live performances by Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson. \n\n\n\n\nIn addition to the performances by singer-songwriters Roger Bontemps Dubé and Owen Ferguson\, this gathering is both an open mic and open stage session. You can join a sing-along\, play your instrument\, read poetry\, or simply listen. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n— Performance and sing-along: Roger Bontemps Dubé\, singer-songwriter \n— Open mic\, open stage\, discussion: Luc Murray Mercier\, moderator \n— Performance: Owen Ferguson\, singer-songwriter \nThis activity is bilingual. English and French will be used in an alternating fashion.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuests \n \n  \nHaving worked in the field of interactive entertainment and teaching as a graphic designer\, Roger Bontemps Dubé‘s career took a turn in 2003. It was then that he published his first children’s book\, Presto et Balthazar\, with great success. As if by magic\, he subsequently transformed into a modern-day troubadour. Since then\, he has performed brilliantly in different contexts: libraries\, schools\, festivals\, and book fairs. \n  \n  \n \nOwen Ferguson is a PhD student and solo musician from Ontario. As a member of the Strong Threads poetry group\, he began weaving spoken word into his songs as a way to showcase poetry alongside music. His latest album\, On Loss (2025)\, explores the grieving process through full-band arrangements and stripped-back acoustic guitar layered with poetry. Outside of music\, Owen is a mediocre hockey goalie and is finishing his PhD on Parkinson’s disease. At this show\, expect a mix of singing\, guitar\, poetry\, and open conversation. \n  \nLuc Murray Mercier is a library assistant at the Morrin Centre\, a graduate student in English literature at Université Laval\, and an artist whose practice ranges from performance to painting by way of sound and installation art\, dance\, and writing. \n  \nThis activity is part of the Creative Community—Making Art Together project\, made possible thanks to the support of the Government of Canada. \nHave a look at the full programming here!

DESCRIPTION:Creative Community:\nThe Hat Trick\n\n\n\n\nLearn about circus creation through hat juggling with Yohann Trépanier! \n\n\n\n\n \nDuring this introductory workshop\, we explore the hat as an object of play and movement. Through juggling\, manipulation\, clowning\, and dancing\, we experience skill\, clumsiness\, and the pleasure of gesture. The hat becomes a playing partner\, a pretext for improvisation\, and a support for expression\, in a fun\, accessible\, and progressive approach. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram: \n– Presentation\, in French\, about contemporary circus and hat juggling \n– Bilingual Q&A \n– Hat juggling workshop (English and French used in an alternating fashion) \nThis workshop is open to all (16 years old and older); no previous experience is required. You will be provided with hats. Please bring comfortable indoor shoes.\n\nBook your tickets here!\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGuest \nA circus artist since 2004\, Yohann Trépanier has developed an artistic universe that is both comic and poetic\, and where the relationship between the body and the object is at the heart of his creativity. He constantly explores new aspects of circus arts and shares his work with diverse audiences from around the world. \nA graduate from the École de cirque de Québec (2007) and the National Circus School in Montreal (2012)\, Yohann stands out for his creativity and proactivity. He made a name for himself with the duo Les Beaux Frères and the essential comic number La Serviette (Napkin). He also co-founded Machine de Cirque\, a company with an international reputation where he was involved as a performer and creator of its several major productions. At the same time\, he nurtured a research and development practice\, through which the oscillating mast for circus acts emerged\, among other things. \nCredit: Marie-Ève Kingsley \nAlways questioning his art and his practice\, Yohann gives depth and singularity to his projects\, whether they are about interpretation\, creation or training. She grew up in Portland\, Oregon and studied creative writing at Portland State University before moving to Montreal in 2006. She co-produced and co-hosted Confabulation\, a monthly storytelling series\, and performed at numerous storytelling events\, including Literary Death Match\, The Moth GrandSLAM\, and The Moth MainStage. \n  \nHer writing has been featured on The Moth Radio Hour\, which airs on 500 radio stations worldwide\, as well as CBC Radio One’s WireTap with Jonathan Goldstein and Public Radio Remix. She has taught storytelling workshops to students of all ages at Confabulation\, the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, The Loft Literary Center and the Morrin Centre.

An Illustrated Talk \n  \nPapers in the Transactions of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec from the 1820s and 1830s are historical documents by individuals in early 19th-century Canada who were searching for knowledge about nature in a “new land” and who also wanted to “excite in the rising generation a taste for scientific knowledge and pursuits.” Two women were among the researchers: Christian Ramsay (Countess Dalhousie)\, who contributed a “Catalogue of Canadian Plants collected in 1827\,” and Harriet Sheppard (“Mrs. Sheppard”)\, who wrote about shells and Canadian songbirds in Quebec and had a keen interest in plants. \n  \nThis talk celebrates women who pursued knowledge of nature\, especially knowledge about plants\, in 19th-century Canada. It features Lady Dalhousie and Anne Mary Perceval in Quebec\, Catharine Parr Traill and Alice Hollingworth in Ontario\, and Mary Brenton in Newfoundland. Who were they? How did they come to know about plants? What were their contributions? What did their work mean to them? How do we find them? And where do we find material by them and about them? \nThis talk also celebrates researchers in Flora’s Fieldworkers whose curiosity led them to letters and biography\, artwork and craftwork\, into archives\, herbaria\, and institutional records\, and also into scrapbooks\, logbooks\, textbooks\, and teaching tools to seek answers to those questions about women and knowledge. \n  \n\n  \nPresenter Biography \n  \nAnn Shteir is a Professor Emerita in the School of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at York University. She received an Honorary Law degree from York University in 2016 for her work in developing York’s pioneering graduate program in Gender\, Feminist\, and Women’s Studies. \nShteir is also the author of Cultivating Women\, Cultivating Science: Flora’s Daughters and Botany in England\, 1760 to 1860 (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 1996)\, which was awarded the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize for Women’s History. She turned her attention next to women and botany in Canada. She collaborated with botanist Jacques Cayouette on an article published in Scientia Canadensis (2019) about four women who collected plants in early 19th-century Quebec and Newfoundland. She also organized a workshop at York University that brought together botanists\, historians of science\, art historians\, literary scholars\, garden historians\, and others who\, like her\, wanted to know more about women\, plants\, and botanical work in Canada across the 1800s. The edited book Flora’s Fieldworkers: Women and Botany in Nineteenth-Century Canada (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2022) was a happy result. \n  \n\n  \nThis event will be a hybrid. \nThis event is part of a talk series celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.

In this talk\, the historian Mairi Cowan will show how a single marginal gloss can open new perspectives on how people in seventeenth-century Quebec thought about the wider world. Marie Hiroüin de la Conception\, a nun at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital\, was described as a “Scottish gentlewoman” in one of the community’s records. Further searching through the Hôtel-Dieu archives and documents from Scotland\, France\, and Italy provides clues about a family that had fled from Scotland to France during the Reformation. \nAugustines at the Hôtel-Dieu in Quebec thought it was essential to emphasize Marie Hiroüin’s Scottishness and nobility\, which raises questions that extend far beyond the small French settlement into what it meant to be “Scottish” so far from Scotland\, how social status in exile could be relevant for a nursing order of nuns\, and why people in New France described Mary Stewart – also known as Mary\, Queen of Scots – as the Queen of England. Thinking through these questions helps us understand the Hôtel-Dieu in New France and the Scottish diaspora\, the complexities of Tudor dynastic succession\, and the far-reaching web of early modern spiritual geopolitics. \n\nPresenter Biography \nMairi Cowan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Historical Studies\, University of Toronto Mississauga. She has written about the tensions of international theology\, national politics\, and local tradition in twelfth-century Glasgow; experiences of childhood in the court of James IV\, King of Scots; the connections between social discipline and the Catholic Reformation in Scotland; colonial efforts to “Frenchify” Indigenous people in seventeenth-century New France; and Jesuit missionaries’ beliefs about demons in Indigenous societies of North America. \nHer most recent monograph\, The Possession of Barbe Hallay: Diabolical Arts and Daily Life in Early Canada (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2022)\, is a microhistory of bewitchment in New France.
