SUMMARY:Lifelong Learning - Empires of the North: The Fur Trade in Canada
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all adults age 50+ in the Quebec City area. \nFACILITATOR: Barry Lane \nThe North American fur trade is one of the world’s great stories.  For Canada it was crucial\, forming for a long time the basis of our economy and ultimately creating the very borders of our country. And for our native peoples it was even more so.  It was their trade.  They were the ones that went out and got the furs and then bought the goods that were traded for them.  For many of them\, for over 200 years\, it was the only contact with whites that they had\, and it prepared them for what was to come as the settler population moved further west.  As one Chief said.  These were the ties that bind.—From Montreal’s fur brigades with French Canadian voyageurs paddling their heavily laden freight canoes 3\,000 miles across the continent\, to the Scotsmen of the famous Hudson Bay’s Company\, the world’s oldest incorporated enterprise\, this 45 minute presentation captures the romance and extraordinary achievement of this early period of Canadian history. \nTO REGISTER: email Catherine at info@lifelonglearningquebec.org\, or call 418.681.1258.
