SUMMARY:Lifelong Learning - Canada Invaded: German U-Boats in the St. Lawrence
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to all adults age 50+ in the Quebec City area. \nFACILITATOR: Barry Lane \nDuring the summer of 1942\, German U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and sank over two dozen Allied ships. The devastation was so great that the British Admiralty had to order the shutdown of the whole St. Lawrence system. \nBased on the logs\, and interviews with the surviving U-boat commanders\, this illustrated lecture describes the extraordinary circumstances under which this campaign took place.  It also relates several German spy missions in Canada waters and an incredible breakout of captured German submarine commanders from their camp in Ontario. Hans Rudel\, the most highly decorated German service man of WWII\, U-505\, the most unlucky submarine to have ever sailed\, and Marlene Dietrich’s “Lilly Marlene” are all part of this presentation. \nTO REGISTER: email Catherine at info@lifelonglearningquebec.org\, or call 418.681.1258. Space is limited. \nSign up for the Lifelong Learning mailing list for updates on activities. Questions or concerns? Contact Catherine at 418.681.1258.
