SUMMARY:Symposium: "The History of Emily Montague"
DESCRIPTION:Any way you read it…the novel is still able to instruct and delight.\n–Borealis Press \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome learn about Canada’s first novel at our half-day symposium aimed to inform and delight. We ask: what value is there in reading Frances Brooke’s The History of Emily Montague today? \nFirst published in 1769 and set in what eventually became Quebec City\, this epistolary novel gives an intimate glimpse of social life just after the British conquest of New France. It is inspired by the writer’s own experience. \nOffering insights on relations among the English\, the Canadiens\, and the Huron-Wendat\, the novel reveals both progressive views and racial prejudices of the period through interwoven love stories. It sheds light on a complicated colonial past whose legacy continues to challenge us. The invited speakers will help us address important facets of the novel: Donald Fyson (specialist in 18th–20th century Quebec history at Université Laval)\, Linda M. Morra (specialist in Canadian women’s literature at Bishop’s University)\, Jean-Philip Rochon Paul (Huron-Wendat Nation)\, Peter Sabor (Canada Research Chair in Eighteenth-Century Studies at McGill University)\, and Philip Sioui (Huron-Wendat Nation). \nThe talks will be accompanied by dramatic readings. A character actor and a touch of period music will add a flavour of the time. Whether you have read the novel or not\, whether you are a member of the public or a specialist in the field\, you are sure to come away with new perspectives on a novel which has continued to engage generations of readers. \nMore information about the presenters and their talks coming soon! \n  \n\nTo register for this FREE event\, click HERE. \nFor a complete list of The History of Emily Montague activities\, please click HERE. \nFor more about the LHSQ200th activities\, please click HERE. \n\nThis activity is in celebration of Frances Brooke’s 300th birthday as well as the LHSQ’s 200th anniversary. It is in partnership with the English literature program in the Département de littérature\, théâtre et cinéma at Université Laval\, the Huron-Wendat Nation\, and CEGEP Champlain-St. Lawrence. \n \n \n \n  \n  \nThank you to the Government of Canada for their support. \n \n\nImage 1: Frances Brooke by Catherine Read\, Oil on canvas (c. 1771)\, Library and Archives Canada\, 1981-88-1\, e011154587 \nImage 2: Frances Brooke by James Hopwood Sr.\, Stipple engraving (1812)\, National Portrait Gallery\, D14044

SUMMARY:Mindfulness - Mental Health Week
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness is the art and practice of of being fully aware of what’s happening in the moment – emotionally\, cognitively\, in any way!  It involves nourishing the capacity to be conscious of what you’re doing and of what is happening around you\, as well as inside you\, with open curiosity\, kindness and an attitude of non-judgement.  Mindfulness can be particularly helpful during stressful times because it can help us step back from our stormy minds\, procide a calmer perspective\, and reveal healthier choices available to use.  It can also help when we need to focus on a difficult or complicated task by reducing the ‘chatter’ of our internal monologue.  While it may come naturally to some\, mindfulness takes practice to master. \nJoin professional psychologist Dr. Meagan Daley in-person at the Wellness Centre at Jeffery Hale for a 1.5-hour session in Mindfulness. \nRegister here. \nQuestions? \nFor more information about this Mindfulness workshop\, please contact Verity\, WE Mind Mental Health Program Coordinator\, by email or phone at 418-684-5333\, ext. 11932.

SUMMARY:My Morrin: Imagining Hopeful Futures - Author Event with Jean-Louis Trudel
DESCRIPTION:How can we make sense of the world and maintain hope for the future? Come share your ideas\, what you’re reading and writing\, and how they help. Discover how Jean-Louis Trudel\, a science fiction author and professor\, and Michèle Thibeau\, creative writer\, sustain their own optimism. They will discuss creative non-fiction and science fiction\, including hopepunk and solarpunk\, that outline new courses of action in optimistic works. \nIf you believe good writing and surprising scenarios can help bridge the gap\, preparing us for possible futures\, join us at Morrin Centre on Sunday\, May 5\, 2024\, at 6 pm. \nRegister here! \n  \nJean-Louis Trudel has been writing science fiction since 1984\, and he’s been following climate change for almost as long. While he’s been teaching university students about it for twenty years\, he feels we need to propose kinder and brighter futures\, both to science fiction audiences and to younger generations.
