SUMMARY:Traditional Sugar Shack
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a sugar shack experience with traditional Quebecois flavours\, live folk music\, and fun outdoor activities! Open to all!🍁🎶 \nA sugar shack (cabane à sucre in French) is a traditional maple syrup-producing cabin found in Québec and other parts of eastern Canada. It is a place where people gather in late winter or early spring to enjoy a traditional meal and taste fresh maple syrup. Originally\, sugar shacks were built near maple tree groves where maple sap was collected and boiled to produce maple syrup. Today\, many sugar shacks operate as seasonal restaurants offering traditional Quebecois meals and entertainment. \nPlus\, enjoy classic sugar shack activities:\n🪗Live traditional music during the meal\n🍭 Maple taffy on snow\n🛷Snow slides\, snow scooters & children’s snowshoes\n🌲 Scenic trails around the sugar shack and access to all outdoor installations \nIt is very important to let us know if you have any allergies right after you book your ticket! Please\, email Viktoria at newcomers@veq.ca to be sure that we inform the restaurant about your allergy in advance. \nRegister Now\n  \n🚙 Transportation\n\nIf you need transportation\, please follow this link to book a transportation ticket!\nAt VEQ\, our goal is to provide access to a variety of activities for everyone in our community. However\, we’ve noticed that our free transportation service has experienced a significant number of no-shows\, which has unfortunately led to wasted resources that could have been used to fund other exciting activities for all.\nTo help ensure that everyone who needs a ride can rely on the service\, starting in February 2025\, we will be requesting a deposit of $5 to $10 to reserve a spot for transportation (for information\, the minimum cost to rent a bus is $275 plus applicable taxes). The deposit will be refunded to participants who attend the activity they reserved transportation for. \n\nThis ticket can be booked or cancelled up to 48 hours before the event.\nA $10 refund will be processed within 5-10 business days for those who are present at the meeting point for transportation.\nTransportation is available only for children aged 4 and older.\nPlease ensure that you need transportation before booking a seat\, as VEQ will cover the service fees for processing cancellations.\n\nIf you require wheelchair-accessible transportation\, have special needs\, or have any other questions\, please contact Viktoria at newcomers@veq.ca.

SUMMARY:Taking a line for a walk: Poetry & Art Workshop with Line Dufour
DESCRIPTION:Taking a line for a walk:\nPoetry & Art Workshop with Line Dufour\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Klee\, an artist from the early part of the 20th century\, first used the term\, ‘taking a line for a walk.’ The idea of a line relates to poetry as much as it does to drawing or painting. Klee’s statement attests to the crucial role spontaneity plays in sparking originality and creativity. A single piece of paper is a quiet space\, a room perhaps\, that offers limitless possibilities beyond text\, beyond communicating factual information. The affecting textures of handmade paper elicit a more personal response which\, when conjoined with visual elements\, our visual vocabulary\, expands aesthetic possibilities\, and presents us with new forms and renderings for our poetry. \nIn this workshop you will create collaged\, printed\, painted\, and/or stitched poems on handmade paper. We will begin with being introduced to a variety of examples of visual poetry\, followed by gathering the various materials available to include in the final visual poem(s). Time will be given to creating small poems spontaneously\, a part of which will be included in the final product(s). \nFriday\, March 14: Part 1 \nFriday\, March 21: Part 2 \nPlease note\, this is a two-part workshop\, and the activities in Part 2 build on what is created in Part 1. \nSpaces are limited. To register\, please contact library@morrin.org. \n\nLINE DUFOUR has been a professional artist for the last thirty years\, exhibiting internationally. She has taken creative writing courses at the University of Toronto since 2016 during which time she also completed the Humber School for Writers program and obtained a Masters with Distinction in Creative Writing and Critical Thinking from University of Gloucestershire. In 2024\, she obtained her Certificate in Creative Writing from the School of Continuing studies from the University of Toronto. Her short story “Exile” has appeared in two anthologies: Raconter ton histoire\, published by La Maison de la Littérature in Quebec City\, and A World of Difference\, published by the University of Gloucestershire. Several of her poems were also included in the former publication. Queen’s Quarterly published her poem “Finding the Words\,” along with the accompanying artwork\, in its April 2024 issue. Her short story\, Asylum\, was longlisted for the 2023 CBC Nonfiction short story prize. Besides writing fiction\, short stories\, and poetry\, she has written non-fiction articles\, such as book reviews and interviews\, that were published in textile (art and craft) magazines for the last fifteen years. \n\nThis event is made possible thanks to support from the Government of Canada.

SUMMARY:Library Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Library Lectures: “The artistic life of Count Premio-Real in Quebec City in the 19th century” by Tommy Byrne\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 11\, 7 p.m. \n  \n  \nPremio-Real dans la capitale: A sentimental journey of a Spanish aristocrat and diplomat in Quebec City in the 19th century \n  \n  \nIt’s hard to imagine these days that a person could be a poet\, researcher\, architect\, civil engineer\, mathematician\, composer\, patron of the arts and seasoned diplomat at the same time. From 1874 to 1888\, Quebec City had the fortune of having as a resident this true renaissance man\, José Antonio de Lavalle Romero y Montezuma\, better known as His Excellency the Count of Premio-Real\, Consul General of Spain for the Dominion of Canada and the British and French possessions in North America. \n  \n  \nAuthor of numerous works relating to areas of his expertise\, ranging from a mathematical essay on laying out of curves to a collection of Iberian aphorisms\, he founded in Quebec the “Club des 21”\, a literary association made up of illustrious men of letters. Through its patronage\, Premio-Real acted as a true catalyst and enabled the artistic development of great musicians\, notably as honorary president of the Septuor Haydn. Several of his contemporaries paid tribute to the noble Spaniard by personally dedicating him works including the maestros Calixa Lavallée and Joseph Vézina as well as the national poet Louis Fréchette. He was a member of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec. \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \nPresenter Biography \n  \n  \nTommy Byrne has been honorary consul of Spain in Quebec City since 2017. He divides his time between managing international relations and culture\, history and heritage projects. Tommy Byrne holds a B.A. in International Studies from Glendon College of York University (Toronto) and a Diploma of Advanced Studies in International Relations from the Geneva Graduate Institute. \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \nThis event will be hybrid. \n  \n  \nThis event is made possible thanks to support from the Government of Canada and the Zeller Family Foundation.
