DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation given by Ewen Booth as part of the My Morrin event series! \n\n\n\n\n\nMy Morrin: Scottish Migration to Quebec\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 25\, at 2:30 p.m. \n  \nMost historians have heard of the “Auld “alliance between France and Scotland dating back to the early 13th century. Others are familiar with the Scottish settlement of the New World after the Seven Years’ Years’ and Irish immigration during the potato famine in the mid-19th century. This presentation is groundbreaking in that it identifies new and essential points of Scottish immigration to the New World\, primarily to what is present-day Quebec. \n  \nNova Scotia claims the home of the first Scottish immigration to Canada\, with the arrival of the ship The Hector in 1773. This presentation dispels this myth\, based on nine years of research and genealogy. The music of Quebec\, the place names\, and the history of many French Canadian families are intertwined with the Scottish immigrants who settled in Quebec\, helping to make the province what it is today. This presentation offers a different perspective on our history and explains many things hidden in time that are only now being uncovered; it is only the tip of the iceberg. \n  \n\n  \nEwen Booth “Le Chardon et la Fleur de Lys” \n  \nEwen Booth is a historical researcher who uses genealogy as a tool to explore areas uncommonly ventured into by others. He and his wife\, Kathleen McKen\, have lived in Montmagny since relocating in 2017. Ewen is a former police officer and museum volunteer who is passionate about history. He uses his experience to unfold history that was never discovered by others previously. With over 140 active family trees\, Ewen’s work continues to grow. Intending to put these stories on paper and develop mini videos for a YouTube audience\, Ewen has also created a Scottish history tour of Quebec City and the south shore of the St. Lawrence River based out of Montmagny. \n  \nEwen was the recipient of the 2020 Gordon Atkinson Memorial Prize in Highlander Military History by the Quebec Thistle Council and is the owner of “Le Ch “rdon et la Fleur de Lys\,” a history project that turned into a business which captures all that he does: research\, genealogy\, history tours\, public presentations\, YouTube videos and written short stories. In addition\, Ewen and Kathleen are restoring their 1767 home while researching previous homeowners\, many of whom are relatives of Kathleen. Kathleen is a French-Canadian descendant of a Scottish soldier who remained in Quebec after 1763 and is the Quebec Commissioner for the Clan MacKinnon Society. SUMMARY:Sliding & Tubing Outing at Le Centre de Glisse Myrand
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting outing to Le Centre de Glisse Myrand on January 24\, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM! This popular sliding and tubing center features five slopes\, including three beginner-level and two advanced-level runs. With artificial snow and evening lighting\, it’s the perfect place for both children and adults to enjoy thrilling rides on inflatable tubes. \nThe slopes offer a fun range of speeds: the beginner slopes can reach speeds of up to 15 km/h\, while the advanced slopes can reach up to 50 km/h. \nFacilities at the center include an ice skating rink\, a ski lift (for the advanced slopes)\, a skater’s lounge\, and public restrooms. \nImportant Information:\nChildren 11 years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times. To access the advanced slopes\, participants must be at least 1.10 meters tall. Each inflatable tube is for one person only on the advanced slopes. Children aged 5 or younger must be accompanied by someone at least 15 years old when sliding\, whether they are in the same tube or not. Children over 5 may be required to have a companion aged 15 or older\, depending on their behavior or any special needs. She grew up in Portland\, Oregon and studied creative writing at Portland State University before moving to Montreal in 2006. She co-produced and co-hosted Confabulation\, a monthly storytelling series\, and performed at numerous storytelling events\, including Literary Death Match\, The Moth GrandSLAM\, and The Moth MainStage. \n  \nHer writing has been featured on The Moth Radio Hour\, which airs on 500 radio stations worldwide\, as well as CBC Radio One’s WireTap with Jonathan Goldstein and Public Radio Remix. She has taught storytelling workshops to students of all ages at Confabulation\, the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, The Loft Literary Center and the Morrin Centre.

An Illustrated Talk \n  \nPapers in the Transactions of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec from the 1820s and 1830s are historical documents by individuals in early 19th-century Canada who were searching for knowledge about nature in a “new land” and who also wanted to “excite in the rising generation a taste for scientific knowledge and pursuits.” Two women were among the researchers: Christian Ramsay (Countess Dalhousie)\, who contributed a “Catalogue of Canadian Plants collected in 1827\,” and Harriet Sheppard (“Mrs. Sheppard”)\, who wrote about shells and Canadian songbirds in Quebec and had a keen interest in plants. \n  \nThis talk celebrates women who pursued knowledge of nature\, especially knowledge about plants\, in 19th-century Canada. It features Lady Dalhousie and Anne Mary Perceval in Quebec\, Catharine Parr Traill and Alice Hollingworth in Ontario\, and Mary Brenton in Newfoundland. Who were they? How did they come to know about plants? What were their contributions? What did their work mean to them? How do we find them? And where do we find material by them and about them? \nThis talk also celebrates researchers in Flora’s Fieldworkers whose curiosity led them to letters and biography\, artwork and craftwork\, into archives\, herbaria\, and institutional records\, and also into scrapbooks\, logbooks\, textbooks\, and teaching tools to seek answers to those questions about women and knowledge. \n  \n\n  \nPresenter Biography \n  \nAnn Shteir is a Professor Emerita in the School of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at York University. She received an Honorary Law degree from York University in 2016 for her work in developing York’s pioneering graduate program in Gender\, Feminist\, and Women’s Studies. \nShteir is also the author of Cultivating Women\, Cultivating Science: Flora’s Daughters and Botany in England\, 1760 to 1860 (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 1996)\, which was awarded the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize for Women’s History. She turned her attention next to women and botany in Canada. She collaborated with botanist Jacques Cayouette on an article published in Scientia Canadensis (2019) about four women who collected plants in early 19th-century Quebec and Newfoundland. She also organized a workshop at York University that brought together botanists\, historians of science\, art historians\, literary scholars\, garden historians\, and others who\, like her\, wanted to know more about women\, plants\, and botanical work in Canada across the 1800s. The edited book Flora’s Fieldworkers: Women and Botany in Nineteenth-Century Canada (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2022) was a happy result. \n  \n\n  \nThis event will be a hybrid. \nThis event is part of a talk series celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.

Explore themes of identity\, social status in exile\, and the complexities of Tudor succession\, offering insights into New France and the Scottish diaspora. \nAbout the Speaker:\nMairi Cowan is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga\, specializing in Scottish and New France history. Her latest works include The Possession of Barbe Hallay (2022) and Gender in Scotland 1200-1800 (2024). \nThis event is part of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s 200th-anniversary series. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, December 18\, 7 p.m. \nA few lines in the margin of a manuscript can tell us a lot about the past. In this talk\, the historian Mairi Cowan will show how a single marginal gloss can open new perspectives on how people in seventeenth-century Quebec thought about the wider world. Marie Hiroüin de la Conception\, a nun at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital\, was described as a “Scottish gentlewoman” in one of the community’s records. Further searching through the Hôtel-Dieu archives and documents from Scotland\, France\, and Italy provides clues about a family that had fled from Scotland to France during the Reformation. \nAugustines at the Hôtel-Dieu in Quebec thought it was essential to emphasize Marie Hiroüin’s Scottishness and nobility\, which raises questions that extend far beyond the small French settlement into what it meant to be “Scottish” so far from Scotland\, how social status in exile could be relevant for a nursing order of nuns\, and why people in New France described Mary Stewart – also known as Mary\, Queen of Scots – as the Queen of England. Thinking through these questions helps us understand the Hôtel-Dieu in New France and the Scottish diaspora\, the complexities of Tudor dynastic succession\, and the far-reaching web of early modern spiritual geopolitics. \n\nPresenter Biography \nMairi Cowan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Historical Studies\, University of Toronto Mississauga. She has written about the tensions of international theology\, national politics\, and local tradition in twelfth-century Glasgow; experiences of childhood in the court of James IV\, King of Scots; the connections between social discipline and the Catholic Reformation in Scotland; colonial efforts to “Frenchify” Indigenous people in seventeenth-century New France; and Jesuit missionaries’ beliefs about demons in Indigenous societies of North America. \nHer most recent monograph\, The Possession of Barbe Hallay: Diabolical Arts and Daily Life in Early Canada (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2022)\, is a microhistory of bewitchment in New France. She is also co-editor of the recent collection Gender in Scotland 1200-1800: Place\, Faith and Politics (Edinburgh University Press\, 2024). \n\nThis event will be a hybrid. \nThis event is part of a talk series celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
